CHRONICLE OF HENRY FORD

Henry Ford, an engineer and entrepreneur from Michigan, established the Ford Motor Company in 1903, his goal was simple but ambitious, to make vehicles that were affordable for the average citizen. Through the implementation of innovative production techniques and standardization of processes, Ford managed to reduce manufacturing costs and ultimately the selling price of its cars, this was possible thanks to Ford's famous philosophy: "make a car for the masses, not for the rich". Henry Ford, the godfather of series production, was haunted by the prospect of running out of automotive parts and raw materials. He was obsessed with the need to accumulate enough materials to ensure that his assembly lines could continue to operate without debilitating deficits. Ford bought its own coal mines in Kentucky and Virginia, along with railroad tracks to transport production to its factories. He assembled a fleet of ships that sailed the Great Lakes and loaded a steady supply of iron ore and timber mined in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. As if that were not enough, he erected a huge plant on the outskirts of Detroit in River Rouge, a complex of factories designed to support all stages of operation that turn the raw material into a finished car. Ford fully understood that supply chains were fragile, requiring constant reviews and backup plans. Despite his hostility to unions, he understood the value of generous wages to motivate workers. Ford recognized that the supply chain, even back then, was fraught with risk. At the beginning of 1914 this innovation increased productivity, thus causing a reduction of monthly work in his factory of between 40 and 60%, mainly due to the monotony of the supply chain and the repeated increases in the production quotas assigned to workers. Ford overcame this difficulty by doubling the industry's median daily wage.

CONCLUSIONS

He was a leading figure in the world of the automotive industry. Dynamic, energetic. It was he who imposed assembly tapes for industrial production. Its motto, cost reduction and efficiency. A pioneer of the welfare state and consumer society. It paid its employees twice as much as other factories did to improve their standard of living. This way they could access a car. He reduced the workweek to five days and limited daily work to eight hours. His Ford T model was an unprecedented success.
