Roles and Responsibilities in Healthcare Practice
Each health profession has their own:
- jargon
- culture
- way of doing things
During interprofessional collaborative practice, we need to accommodate each other and work
together for the betterment of the patient
Barriers to Roles and Responsibilities in Healthcare Practice
1. Power Imbalances – professionals may be reluctant to agree/participate if there is an
imbalance between team members.
2. Strict adherence to professional autonomy – if an AHP functions only in their ‘silo’, elements
like cooperation and collaboration are restricted.
3. Overlapping responsibilities – may cause confusion and miscommunication.
Self-Reflection Skills
Skills needed for successful self-reflection:
1. Awareness – conscious of oneself.
2. Description – ability to state the characteristics of something in a non-judgmental manner
3. Critical Analysis – ability to examine the components, internal structure and interactions of a
whole to understand it.
4. Synthesis – ability to form a single coherent idea out of several different elements.
5. Evaluation – ability to pass judgement over something using a set criteria or standard.
6. Action or Intervention – ability to decide where and how to take action, once a new
