A guide to being a parent at Ryde Secondary College

There’s a whole new vocabulary required to understand your children and their teachers in high school. Here is a glossary of terms: Assessment task Test/exam/assignment/practical assessment that will be marked by teachers. Students get a note at least two weeks prior to a test occurring or an assignment is due to be handed in. ATAR Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (out of 100 given in Year 12) BYOD Bring Your Own Device. This is a computer, Chromebook, iPad or similar device that can connect to the internet through the college’s portal. All students should have one. A smartphone won’t do. See Year Adviser if you have problems providing one for your student. CAPA Creative and Performing Arts (faculty) Deputy or DP 5 x Deputy Principals in 2024 - Karl Berthold, Jake Tonkin, Americo Chisari, Dona Issa, Christine Manning. Each DP looks after a particular year group and follows your student through their years at high school. Google Classroom This is an online site that many of the teachers use to receive electronically submitted work. Parents only have visibility of this site if their children show it to them. Head Teacher (HT) Teacher responsible for a faculty or subject, or the educational aspects of a particular year. HSC Higher School Certificate (provided after completing Year 12) HSIE Human Society and Its Environment (faculty) LOTE Languages Other Than English (known as ESL in primary school) NAPLAN National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. This test is done by all in Years 7 and 9 only and requires no study. NESA NSW Educational Standards Authority (previously known as the Board of Studies) sets curriculum standards for all subjects. Notes home Your child will receive these regularly for permission to attend excursions, incursions, sport, carnivals, camp etc. Check their bags weekly, till you see how reliable they are at giving them to you! Parent-Teacher meetings One meeting/year is held in the library. It’s like speed dating! Five minutes per teacher. Bring students if you want to involve them. Online booking sent out a few weeks before each one. P&C Parents and Citizens Association meets via zoom third Wednesday of month PDHPE Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (faculty) Principal Cassy Norris (in charge of 130 staff and 1450 students) RAM Resource Allocation Model. This is a formula used by the Department of Education to allocate funding to schools based on the socioeconomic level of the families of students. Schools get more funding per student in poorer areas. RSC Ryde Secondary College (or ‘the College’) Sentral/parent portal RSC’s intranet where all parents and students can access timetables, teacher announcements, assessment notifications, homework due, attendance records etc. You’ll be given a password. Save it as a favourite: rydesecondarycollege.sentral.com/portal/login
