Concrete Design & Technology (CVEN90016) – Concrete Labs: Instructions (2016)

Making concrete cylinders for compression testing

  1. Mixing procedure:  Mix coarse dry ingredients: aggregate and sand  Add fly ash and Portland cement  Add liquids slowly while mixing: water and superplasticiser  Mix for about 4 minutes and check mix consistency/moisture

  2. Casting the standard sized cylinder moulds (100mm diameter ×200mm height) with the fresh concrete mix:  First oil the cylinders so that concrete does not bond with the mould  Fill half of the cylinders with concrete, and vibrate for a short time (less than 1 minute, stop vibrating once the formation of bubbles stop)  Then completely fill the cylinders and vibrate one more time (stop vibrating once the formation of bubbles stop)

  3. Flatten the top of the cylinders and remove any excess concrete  Make sure you also wipe the moulds

  4. Re-locate the moulds to designated location for curing

  5. Clean up the laboratory space and equipment used
