Objective
This assignment examines the importance of the cost of quality to an organization. Through this, we will gain a better
understanding of how we can measure the cost of quality in an organization and what benefits can be gained from the
cost of quality.
Scenario
This is a true story that dominated the media worldwide in late 2018 and early 2019 and shook an established and
trusted company to its core. Once the crisis was over, 346 people had died as a result of two airline crashes. Agencies like
the FAA around the world grounded the 737 Max forcing airlines around the world to put their 737 Max planes into
storage and rent other aircraft or cut their flight schedules. After 20 months and losses in the millions, the FAA lifted the
grounding in November of 2020 and slowly these aircraft began to return to service.
Deliverables
Analyze the above scenario using the 4 Costs of Quality given below:
Appraisal cost
Prevention cost
Internal failure cost
External failure cost
Your detailed analysis and report should reflect:
Root cause(s) of the issue
Why was the MCAS system added to the Max 8?
How did a company that had a reputation for quality and safety find itself in this situation?
How did the Boeing leadership manage this crisis?
