ENLG Dr. Eve Preus

ENGL 1130 Quiz

Instructions: There are 20 questions total. Match the appropriate text to the q uestion. Please write only the last name of the author on the answer line. Some texts are used more than once and some not at all.

I. Match the key term with the correct essay

  1. Tutelage ________________Kant ___________________

  2. Euphemism ________________Cohn __________________

  3. Aesthetic Stamp ______ Azevedo & Gonçalves_________

  4. Femme Fatale _______________ Martin____ ___ ________

  5. Narration Sickness Freire___

  6. *Writer _________Tan , Adnan, or Goto ________

  • I	had	originally been	thinking	just	Tan,	but	ALL	three	writers	are	critically	thinking	about
the role of a writer, so all work and are good answers.

II. Match the author’s “They Say” to the appropriate text. Remember, the “They Say” is the voice /scholar the author uses at the very beginning of the essay to speak to or against.

  1. President David Strangway Suzuki____

  2. HAL ______ ________Carr _____________________

  3. Glenn Gould Rafay_____

  4. Paulo Freire Azevedo & Gonçalves___

  5. The Microbe Hunters ______ ______ Nikiforuk_________________

III. Match the potential Larger Conversation to the Appropriate Text

  1. The Cultural Importance of Speculative Fiction Goto_____________

  2. The Conceptual Systems that Underlie Language ___Lakoff & Johnson; Cohn __

  3. Cultural Metaphors Used in Biological Sciences Martin; Nikiforuk__

  4. Effects of Information Technology on Cognition ______________Carr __________________

IV. Match the following to the scholar who would most likely agree

  1. We must not assume learning a new language is always necessarily neutral; it can change your thinking for the worse. _Cohn

I think this question was the most challenging; Tan and Adnan both discuss how learning and using a given language cha nges you and can often result in less access to socio -cultu ral worlds. But they never suggest that these languages change your thinking for the worse. Only Cohn does this when she directly claims that learning technostrategic language changed her thinking such that she no longer saw the human suffering behind nuclear arms deci sions; her thinking about the issue of nuclear power changed for the worse (according to her values at least) when she used this language that abstracted and minimized the human cost.

  1. We must be free, and the best way to be free is to think for yourself. _Kant

  2. We must be free, and the best way to be free is work together with others. Freire

(I gave you 2 points if you answered “Azevedo & Gonçalves”; they don’t explicitly discuss liberation the way Freire does, but since Freire ’s notion of literacy is critical to their ideas, I think this is an okay secondary answer.)

  1. We must not assume learning a new language is always necessarily neutral; non- native languages can be imposed on children of a colonized country to promote the power of that country. Adnan

  2. We must be free, and the best way to be free is to actively notice the world around you Perec__

Texts

Adnan, “To Speak in a Foreign Tongue” Azevedo & Goncalves,“Writing and Reading with Art” Carr, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Cohn, “Rational World of Defense Intellectuals” Freire, “Banking Concept of Education” selection from Pedagogy of the Oppressed Goto, “Of Liminal Spaces” Kant, “What is Enlightenment” Lakoff & Johnson, Metaphors We Live By
