Psychological disorders Perspectives on causes • Biological • Psychodynamic • Learning • Cognitive • Humanistic DSM-5 - Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder - Enables professionals to speak same language when diagnosing, treating, researching, conversing abt variety of psychological orders - Mostly happens after adolescence Psychological Disorder Neurosis - Obsolete term - Personal distress, impairment in fnxning, no loss of contact w/ reality Psychosis - Loss of contact w/ reality, delusion, hallucinations, impaired ability to fnxn Anxiety disorder - Vague, general uneasiness, feeling smth bad abt to happen - Most common diagnosed Generalized AD - Dx if excessive anxiety and worry difficult to control - Symptoms - Women > men Panic attack - Attack of overwhelming anxiety, fear, terror Panic disorder - Dx w recurring panic attack - Genetics Phobias - Persistent, irrational fear and avoidance of object, situation, activity - Realize their fear is irrational Agoraphobia - Intense fear in situations where immediate escape not possible or no help Social AD - Irrational fear of social or performance situations if might embarrass, humiliate self in front of others - 1/3 fear spkng in public Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - Recurrent obsessions, compulsions - Obsession o Persistent, recurring, involuntary thoughts, image, impulses, causes great distress - Compulsion - o Compelled to repeat certain acts over and over or perform rituals repeatedly Causes of OCD o Autoimmune system disease, strep infxn, changes in brain from infxn o Genetics – genes affecting serotonin fxng suspected Dissociative Disorder - Dissociated from identity and memories of important personal events - Mental escape from intolerable circumstances Dissociative Amnesia - Complete or partial loss of ability to recall personal info or identify past experiences - Psychological cause Dissociative Identity Disorder - Two or more distinct, unique personalities in same individual - Multiple Personality Disorder - HOST PERSONALITY – executive control of body most times - ALTER PERSONALITIES – may differ radically even in gender, age, sexual orientation Schizophrenia Begins in adolescence or early adulthood - Social disruption and misery for sufferers and their families - Strong genetic Positive Symptoms o Behaviours that are present in a schizophrenic brain otherwise not present in a nonschizophrenic brain ▪ Hallucination ▪ Delusion ▪ Delusion of grandeur – believe they are a famous of person ▪ Delusion of persecution – false belief that other will cause harm ▪ Thought disturbances ▪ Grossly disorganized behaviour ▪ Inappropriate affect – facial expression, tone of voice, gesture not reflecting emotion expected Negative Symptoms o Behaviours that are not present in a schizophrenic brain otherwise present in a nonschizophrenic brain ▪ Flat affect – no usual emotional response; robotic ▪ Lack of care for physical well-being Personality disorder
