What does memory research tell about the most effective strategies to use to study for exams?
Why do these strategies work? Support your answer with evidence.
When it comes to learning and remembering information for exams, asking questions can be
beneficial. By elaborating you can ask yourself questions for example “How do I know it`s true”
or “Why is this truth true?’’ Numerous studies on memory have discovered that the amount of
information processed affects how strong a memory trace is. This can help you consolidate and
recall the facts by encouraging you to learn new information with things you already know,
enhancing your memory for the new information by attaching it to your baseline of knowledge.
Practice testing helps you to get used to the exam format and helps to memorize knowledge
quickly if you are using flashcards. It also has been found to help you increase your memory
faster by reading and rereading content. This helps train your long-term memory retrieval skills.
Self-explanation helps you build meaning and connect associations with it, helping to trigger
memories in the brain and help you remember, rather than summarising it. When you do this,
it helps you to explain to yourself what you know, and if you come across any issues, it helps you
to reconsider what you’ve learned along the way.
Disturbed practice helps you to study in various sessions over a long period. Taking breaks in
between helps you to re-start your memory for certain topics. Each session will get easier than
the one before when you are having issues trying to recall information and requiring your brain
to absorb it. Each time you read the information it gets easier than before until you have
memorized the material.
