Lecture 2 - Poster Pitch Guidance/West Dorset

Part 1 Assessment Take Producing Posters & Delivering Oral Presentation Group Formation Part 2 West Dorset/BaNES Hazard, risk & management examples Group initial appraisal

Group Project - 50% of module - this is based on a combination of staff and peer assessment Group Size - 4-

Key Steps 1- Form a group and sign up (Friday 12th, by 2pm latest) 2- explore possible topics 3- Arrange your own group meetings to identify and manage project tasks/responsibilities, etc 4- Identify, obtain, analyse resources (documentary) 5- Produce poster digitally, and upload to minerva 6- Review other posters from other groups on minerva 7- Peer assessment, using the provided proforma and guidance 8- Prepare and deliver a pitch on your poster and answer questions (3 min. Presentation and 5 mins on question)

Key Dates Decision on group members + sign up (TODAY) Decision on Topic area (Friday 12th, 2pm) Poster Submitted digitally (Monday 10th December, 3pm) Formative review of posters on minerva (11th-14th of december) Pitch and discussion (14th of December, 12-2pm)

Poster requirements 1- A1, Portrait 2- Address a hazard,risk and management issue in West Dorset or BaNES (Not both!!!) 3- Respond to questions in the module handbook 4- Implement the advice given in the module handbook, and from other sources

Pitch requirements 1- 3 minute pitch in front of/interacting with your poster (no projection facilities are available), all members must speak 2- Outline main messages/themes of the poster 3- take part in a constructive discussion (other groups will have pre-prepared questions) USE A QR CODE FOR REFERENCES Also add names!!!!

Posters - Key Advice Preparation 1- Consider the audience 2- Get the text format, layout, and content right!!! 3- Style should be consistent 4- Limit the number of words, and consider grouping/subdividing content 5- Prepare high quality and relevant images (photos, maps, graphs, tables, etc.) 6- Decide on colour schemes/backgrounds 7- Cite as required 8- Produce and A3 black and white draft- check it carefully prior to uploading

Desirable Outcomes 1- Summarise key information effectively- so concise, directed, simple, high-impact, unique identity 2- Looks professional and eye-catching 3- Promotes high-calibre discussion

Oral Presentations - Key Advice Prior to the pitch 1- Establish the purpose 2- Prepare (practice delivery/speed) 3- Interact with audience (be succinct, structured, summarise) During the pitch 1- Relax, enjoy, and arrive on time 2- Control pitch timing (don’t exceed allocation) 3- Manage the audience, develop eye contact and be confident!!
