Activity W6(3): Analysis of potential BIS Ethical Issues

Ethical case study

iCYou 1 uses various methods and techniques to monitor their employees in the workplace. The key data practice involved is related to the monitoring of employee activities on the company’s network/computer system. Specifically, iCYou uses a software to scan and review the content of employees’ company provided emails. iCYou claims their workplace monitoring and surveillance practices are needed to protect the company and to maintain a high level of productivity and efficiency from their employees. When the employees join the company, the email monitoring policy and the consequence of breaking them have been written into the contract of employment.

Is this form of monitoring the employees in the workplace by iCYou ethical? Should iCYou monitor the contents of the employees’ provided emails.

Your task: Use the BIS Ethical Framework by Laudon & Laudon to analyse the

situation from the above case study and write a short report (maximum one

page).

 Identify and clearly state ONE potential ethical dilemma.  How does it relate to BIS ethics? Identify the most relevant BIS issues.  Identify the main stakeholders (people/organisation)  State iCYou proposed action  State your reason for what iCYou would do to resolve the identified dilemma

1 ICYou is a fictitious company. Any resemblance to actual companies, either past or present, is purely coincidental.
