1.03 Indicative learning objectives
Medical Sciences
•Describe the macroscopic and microscopic structure (including nerve and blood supply) of the exocrine and
endocrine pancreas, liver, spleen, gall bladder, bile duct and portal vein.
•Revise the digestive process with particular emphasis on pancreatic enzymes.
•Outline the main functions of the liver related to synthesis, storage, and detoxification.
•Describe how products of absorption (carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids) are metabolised by the liver to
provide energy and basic bimolecular components.
•Describe the features of hormones and explain how they act on cells, e.g. receptor mediated, nuclear.
•Describe the role of the liver in drug metabolism, including phase I (by oxidation, reduction or hydrolysis) and
phase II (conjugation) metabolism.
•Discuss the role of diet and physical activity in health.
Describe the metabolism of alcohol and its effects (referring to guidance on safe limits).
Population Health
•Define demography and describe the age structure of populations with particular reference to population
pyramids.

•Illustrate the concepts and components of health promotion and give examples of health promotion activities

•Discuss the concept of stigma, identifying its different forms and their significance for health care.
•Describe the research approach of ethnography and discuss examples of its use in health care.
•Outline the transtheoretical model of behaviour change; consider how it can inform conversations with
patients, for example, when supporting someone to lose weight.
•Describe the health belief model – what factors affect willingness to engage in health protective factors.

•Outline key ethical decision making tools for case analysis, e.g. four principles and four quadrants and apply
to PBL scenario
