3 Types of Servers Homework
Q: Identify and describe one other method that could be used to allow games to be played on
multiple devices. [3]
A Hypervisor is a method that could be used to allow games to be played on multiple devices as the
software is written for a particular processor which manage different operating systems or copies of
the operating system on a single computer or computer system. Also prevents clashing with the
other operating systems.
Q: Explain why Progress Gaming would use a both a database server and an application server. [10]
A database server can allow you to have multiple devices connected to a computer to access to the
data held on the server. Storing this data on a data base is more reliable so no data will be lost.
An application server allows all users to have access to the common applications but will also restrict
certain applications to those invalid of access.
Q: Explain why a company would use both a file server and a mail server. [10]
FILE SERVER
Manages large number of files, stores, indexes, remembers where they are, takes
responsibility for security
Ensure backups are made
MAIL SERVER
Acts as an electronic post office
Receives emails
External senders, mail server passes it to the mail server of the recipients’ domain
Mail servers use SMTP to send, POP3 or IMAP to receive it
A company will use a file server as they mange a large number of files which will be necessary for
their company. They will need to do loads of communication and using the file server enables this to
be possible. It ensures that only those entitled to the file/document are the only ones that can read
them, and have the rights to edit or delete them. They need to be able to rely in the server if
anything bad happens they still have access to their files and with the file server they ensure that
backups are made at an agreed time so that data can be restored.
A company will also use a Mail Server as it will allow the company to send and receive important
emails regarding their business. They wont have to manually do their mail as the mail service acts as
an electronic post office making it convenient for the members of the company.
