Looking at the scatter-graphs, compete the sentences below using: positive/negative/no and then increase/decrease/not affected.

ACTIVITY:

Are the following positive or negative correlations? Write your answers next to the sentences.

  1. The more aggressive the parents , the more aggressive the children are

  2. The hotter the temperature, the fewer clothes people wear

  3. The fewer sweets eaten, the fewer fillings needed

  4. The colder the weather, the higher people’s fuel bills

  5. The more people exercise, the lower their risk of heart disease

  6. More sociable people have more friends

  7. The fewer hours of daylight, the more depressed people there are

  8. The more films you watch the more interesting you are

Activity: Each row has a set of hypotheses for a research question. Label which hypothesis is the: Null hypothesis, One-tailed hypothesis, Two-tailed hypothesis, Not correct for correlation

This activity will help you to...
· Interpret correlations from coefficients and scattergrams
· Understand the relationship between coefficients and scattergrams
Activity: Here are some scattergrams and the correlation coefficients that
correspond to them. Try matching them up.

+0 +0 -0 +0 -0 +0.

What is a correlation coefficient?
A correlation coefficient is a statistic that describes the relationship between
two sets of paired data.. The correlation coefficient tells you essentially the
same thing as a scattergram, namely: whether two variables are related; if so, how
strongly; and whether the relationship is positive (as one rises so does the other) or neg-
ative (as one rises, the other falls). Correlation coefficients are always numbers be-
tween -1 and +1. They are interpreted as follows:

ACTIVITY: Now complete the ‘Apply your knowledge’ tasks on correlations on p207 of the Cardwell & Flanagan textbook, worth 10 marks.
