EXAMPLE DESIGN

ACTIVITY 1:

Each of the following sets of pictures represents an experimental design; each set has an experimental and control condition. Identify which is: REPEATED MEASURES, INDEPENDENT GROUPS, MATCHED PAIRS.

ACTIVITY 3: Imagine you are going to conduct an experiment to investigate whether males or females have a better memory for faces. Explain why an independent groups design would be the only possible design you could use.

ACTIVITY 2: Imagine you are going to conduct an experiment to investigate the effective- ness of two different types of treatments for phobias. Explain why you would not be able to use a repeated measures design.

Repeated measures

The same participants are used in each condition - rules out individual differences.

Independent groups Matched pairs

Convenient — Fewer participants need to be recruited, as they are used twice.

Order effects- participants take part in all conditions-the effect isn’t solely due to the IV.

Demand characteristics - participants may figure out the aim of the study and behave differently

Individual differences - Any differences between conditions could be due to individual differences in participants Not convenient – more participants needed – therefore less economical

Less demand characteristics - less likely to figure out what the study aims to do No order effects - participants only take part in one condition

No order effects - participants only take part in one condition

Less individual differences - Individual differences between conditions are reduced as participants have been matched up

Not convenient - match up all participants - time consuming

Possible individual differences - Not always able to match up exactly

ACTIVITY 4: Choose a different colour for each design and colour all the advantages and disadvantages to match the designs.

ACTIVITY: Alton Towers have commissioned you to conduct research into which types of ride are most worth investing in. Ideally, they want to know whether rollercoasters or water rides are more exciting for visitors.

REPEATED MEASURES INDEPENDENT GROUPS MATCHED PAIRS

Explain how you would carry out a FIELD experiment using:
