DRIVING TEST QUESTIONS

TELL ME QUESTIONS –

  1. Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey I would check the brakes as I set off, they should not feel spongy or slack. If the brakes are working properly the vehicle should not pull to one side

  2. Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked I would check the car’s manual or manufacture’s guide. I can check using the reliable pressure gauge to check and adjust the pressure when the tyres are cold. I would then refit the valve caps and check the spare tyre if there is one.

  3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eyes or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as it is comfortable. Note: some restraints might not be adjustable

  4. Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient thread dept and that their general condition is safe to use on the road I would check if they have no cuts or bulges. They must have at least 1 of the tread depth across the middle three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre

  5. Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working. I would turn on the ignition, operate the switch all the way to the right and then walk around the car to check if the lights are working

  6. Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system I would see the ABS warning light on the dashboard if there’s a fault

  7. Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working I would turn on the ignition and hazard warning light then walk around the car to check the indicators are working

  8. Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working I would press the brake pedal and ask someone to check the brake lights come on or use reflections in windows or doors to check

  9. Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting the journey, I will start the engine and apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel, that should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. OR I can turn the steering wheel just after moving off and that will give me an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

  10. Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use it/them I would turn on the ignition, then operate the switch all the way to the right and pull it towards me. I would then check if the warning light appears on the dashboard. I would only use them if visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you can’t see for more than 100 metres

  11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on I would turn on the ignition, operate the switch all the way to the right to dipped headlights. I would then pull the left lever away from me to activate main beam

  12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil I would open the bonet, remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a cloth. I would then put it back in the holder and take it out again. I would look at the high and low marks – the oil level should be in between them. If it’s too low top it up but make sure not to overfill it as you could damage the engine

  13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant I would check the coolant level by looking at the high and low level marks on the radiator header tank. If the levels are low, top it up with a water and anti-freeze mix, but only when the engine is cold

  14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid I would check the brake fluid that must be kept between the high and low marks – If it’s low, top it up with the correct type of fluid which I can find out what this is the car’s manual

  15. Drive alongside the bays that you will use and stop about a metre away from, them, straighten your car and stop. Put in reverse gear and do all-around observation

  16. Once observation is done and its safe, reverse in a straight line until you get to your point of turn. The reference point is when the first line of the first bay is aligned near the door handle (using this turn it will get you into the third bay along) Once observation is done once again, drive slowly and immediately steer quickly full lock max to the left

  17. Once you’re in the bay and you can see that you are straight (check that your dashboard is parallel into something in front or the lines are on your side mirrors then straight wheels and reserve straight into bay

  18. Observe over both shoulders as you drive slowly back

FORWARD BAY –

  1. Keep far left – this position will make it easier as you'll have more room to steer in and straighten up

  2. Observation then full lock to the right until the first line of the bay is under the door mirror (that’s the reference point)

  3. Drive slowly, but steer quickly full lock, max to the right. Once you're in the bay, and nearly straight, start to straighten your steering back to the left. To make sure your car is straight in the bay, your dashboard should be in line with something in front of you

  4. Stop once the line goes just under your right-hand mirror (reference point) Stop before driving into the bay ahead of you if there is one. Apply the parking brake and select neutral.

PARALLEL PARKING –

Drive alongside the car that you're going to reverse park behind. Change into reverse gear and do observation.

Reserve slowly, looking over your left shoulder. Stop when your left mirror is ¾ of the car

As you reverse slowly, do one whole turn to the left (not full lock). Reverse slowly until the camera indicator is over the kerb.

Then do a full lock to the right.

Once the car is nearly straight to one more turn to the left to straight the car
