Sue Meade 22 years of age presents to the clinic with
complaints of burning pain and urgency when urinating. The
patient has a fever of 100F. The urine is strong in odor and
cloudy with sediment.
A. What questions should the nurse ask during the
assessment to gain more information about the possible
causes of the urinary tract infection?
How much water/fluids do you think you drink in a
day?
Do you think you drink an adequate amount of fluids/
water?
What other symptoms do you have?
Are you taking any medication?
Have you ever had a UTI before?
Do you use contraceptive? What kind?
Are you sexually active?
Do you urinate after sex?
How many times do you urinate in one day?
Do you have any pain? Where is the pain located?
B. What patient education should be provided?
The nurse should educate on taking plenty of water
daily, to flush out any bacteria from the system.
Encourage patient to void as soon as possible after
sexual intercourse, and to take antibiotics as prescribed.
