Commonwealth Scholarships in the UK are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). An important selection criterion is the potential contribution that you will make to international development if you are awarded a scholarship. Provide a Development Impact statement in 4 parts explaining:
I. How your proposed study relates to: a) Development issues at the global, national, and local levels? b) Development issues connected to your chosen CSC development theme and the wider sector? Development Impact part I *
The world is facing a hunger, starvation, and malnutrition crisis due to a lack of policies and practices that would ensure food security and sustainable food production. The impacts of food shortage are felt locally and globally, and there is a need for action to guarantee the availability and quality of food globally. Although hunger is now a global crisis, the government and policymakers need to express calmness and assurance of the ability to mitigate the disaster and come up with long-lasting solutions to solve the problem. Integration of necessary frameworks into the response to and overcoming the crisis is crucial for the success of proposed policies and solutions to curbing global hunger and starvation. Under the proposed study, I can intuitively come up with globally accepted recommendations and solutions to the hunger and starvation crisis in my country and beyond. The study will help me gain the required knowledge and skills in policy-making to achieve sustainable development goals and improve people's lives. With the knowledge and skills gained through the study, I will be on the front line of championing enhancing the quality of life through availability and access to quality food.
- What you expect will change in development terms following your studies, including
a) The outcomes that you aim to achieve b) The timeframe for their implementation c) Who the beneficiaries will be
Development impact part 3
I aim to see an all-around transformation in how we, as a people, respond to crises and the measures that can be put into place to alleviate the impacts of disasters and prevent reoccurrence. After my studies, I intend to join hands with different organizations and bodies to help the population learn the relevance of preparation for crises by laying a solid foundation to help them mitigate disasters such as hunger, famine, and drought.
The knowledge I will gain from the study will help me identify any loopholes in what has been done over the years, what needs to be improved, and what new policies and measures need to be implemented to ensure the sustainability of developments.
The timeframe for implementing these outcomes will be during my studies to one year after graduating. In that period, I am looking forward to fostering an organizational and population partnership to help educate the mass on the importance of preparing for crises by avoiding wastage and overexploitation. Following my studies, I aim to help the government in my home country formulate policies that will help achieve sustainable development goals by reducing hunger and responding to consumption and production. The more significant beneficiaries of my studies will be the local population, with whom I will be working to create awareness of the importance of sustainable developments that will improve their livelihoods. I will tirelessly strive to gain the relevant knowledge and skills and their application in real life to help the local and global population enhance food production by exploiting available resources while implementing different technologies in agriculture.
- How the impact of your work could be best measured?
The impact of my work will be measured through three criteria: economic, social, and environmental impacts. I intend to transform agricultural practices' economic layout to ensure food security. Helping many people get into farming will create jobs, including farmers, farm workers, distributors, and farm produce vendors, improving the economy. Environmental changes occur during the exploitation of available resources. Farming will make environments greener and healthier by integrating practices like agroforestry. Positive changes in the background and economy improve the social cohesion of the population. I intend to bring people together with availability and access to quality food and develop sustainable policies that will enhance the population's quality of life.
Career plans in the five years following the award
The knowledge and skills I will gain from the study will be crucial as I climb the ladder to my career. I look forward to achieving the qualifications required to work with the government, non- governmental organizations, or private organizations to make decisions and formulize policies that will improve the overall livelihood of the population. My goal is to help my home country achieve its sustainable development goals of zero hunger, climate action, and responsible production and consumption. I believe it is our responsibility as a people to uplift each other to improve the quality of life. In my five-year career plan, I also look forward to working with the public to bridge the knowledge gap on how the population can exploit the available resources to the maximum to improve agricultural productivity and reduce food shortages. Educating the public and collaboratively working with them to transform their economic and social conditions and lift them from poverty. The study award will help me achieve my aspiration of working with international organizations to make policies and decisions that will improve the quality of life toward achieving global sustainable development goals. After the study, I look forward to working with local and international research institutions to investigate and recommend the best ways for nations to achieve sustainability, alleviate poverty and enhance food security. I also plan on working with universities and other higher educational institutions to spread the knowledge and skills I will gain from this scholarship and educate other learners on development, sustainability, and best agricultural practices that will ensure food security.
Long-term career plans
My long-term career plan following the award of the study is to venture into private practice or establish a non-governmental organization where I will be working collaboratively with the government and other private organizations to create and achieve sustainable goals and policies that will improve the quality of life of the population in my home country. In my long-term plan, I look forward to working with international organizations like the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to help achieve the global goals of ending poverty, protecting the planet, and improving the quality of life. I aspire to be able to create jobs for many people to improve the economic sustenance of the country. The knowledge and experiences I will have gained over the years will help me establish and run the Non-governmental organization with the help of local and international expertise. The NGO will be population centered on helping improve livelihoods through food security and educate the people on the importance of disaster preparations, resilience during crises, and how to recover from the different crises they will encounter.
I am concerned about the different ways of alleviating poverty in the country to ensure continued development, undisrupted access and availability to quality food, and how I can integrate them into my long-term career plans. I look forward to being a research collaborator on sustainable agriculture in different research institutions, locally and globally. I also plan to be an educator in institutions of higher learning, training learners on sustainable development goals, their relevance to people’s lives, and how they can apply their skills to better the country’s livelihood.
