Introduction
In the dynamic field of nursing education, the effectiveness of teaching methods is crucial
for shaping the competencies and skills of nursing students. This assignment highlights the role
of different approaches in nursing education, which enhances the learning activities of the
students. Throughout this assignment, various teaching approaches are mentioned, along with the
significance of learning activities. By examining the different methods, we aim to enhance
engagement and learning opportunities to improve the healthcare system.
Provide an example of how humor can be used to enhance learning in nursing education
(either to patients, staff, or students).
Humor means making people laugh by saying or acting. In education, the role of humor
is significant in learning activities and enhances learning due to fun related to humor. The
recognition of the role of humor has yet to be well known by the people; however, it has played a
vital role in sustaining knowledge for a long time. The humor can catch the attention of the
students and enhance learning due to engaging with the learning environment. It also relieves
stress due to the challenging situations in the learning environment.
In the context of nursing education, humor is valuable in educating the complex
conceptual topic, which is retained for an extended period. One example is that humor can be
used for learning purposes in training sessions for nursing students. When used correctly, humor
can motivate people. Instead of delivering a conservative method of learning, the educator
should incorporate humor into the presentations or activities. Additionally, humor can create an
interactive learning environment that assists them when students interact with patients. For
communicated the gap area where students can improve. By highlighting both the success and
areas for development, educators can empower the students to reflect on their performances.
Self-assessment makes the individual better because it offers the location of the gap that needs to
be covered by creating a plan for improvement. This loop of feedback provides the students with
a culture of continuous improvement in which students can strive for excellence and grow better
and better in their respective fields. In addition to this, they encourage the students to ask
questions on even minor doubts and share their ideas without hesitation, which improves their
knowledge as well as communication skills. They also encourage the students to explore more
ideas and learn from their experiences. These supportive techniques help them to enhance their
confidence and self-esteem (Gcawu & van Rooyen, 2022).
Many educators need to do better in promoting the learning environment. In fact, they
hinder learning. Educators who promote passive learning hinder learning activities. Students
need more from passive learning and retain the knowledge in real life. The negative feedback
also blocks the learning activity because when educators criticize students for their mistakes, it
can demotivate them, hindering the learning activity. Expecting the students to learn more from
their capabilities by giving them more assignments also produces resistance in the learning
process; therefore, the environment should be in such a way that promotes learning deliberately
(Li & Xue, 2023).
Describe a situation in which an educator used a creative or innovative approach to
promote understanding of an idea or concept. Discuss how this may influence your
teaching approaches.
In the modern era, where technology has changed the healthcare system totally, learning
activities have also changed over time. Now, various innovations have emerged in learning
activities. One such approach I have seen is incorporating case-based learning (CBL) with
technology using virtual reality (VR) simulation. Instead of traditional learning methods,
educators use technology to enhance learning outcomes. The educator divided the classroom into
small groups, and each group was given a case-based scenario. Each group was tasked with
identifying the underlying causes of the condition. Students are immersed in real-world scenarios
using VR headsets. They could interact with the patients in a medical environment where they
analyze the case and propose a treatment plan. Nursing students can also use the same scenario
in their practices to enhance their skills (Challa et al., 2021).
This technique has a variety of advantages, ultimately improving learning outcomes. VR
simulation with CBL provides a comprehensive and realistic environment where students can
interact and engage with patients and improve their knowledge. The technique helps the students
practice safely without taking any risks. It also allows the students to make mistakes and then
learn from them to gain experience, which improves their clinical decision-making abilities.
Moreover, VR simulation captures the attention of the students, resulting in enhanced
engagement of the student. The traditional method of teaching is quite dull and tiring, which
prevents them from engaging. The active learning activities not only strengthen engagement but
also increase the retention of information.
Consider an innovation that was recently implemented in a healthcare or academic setting
that you are familiar with. Using the "Process of Innovation" (Box 5-1, p. 61, Bradshaw,
Hultquist, & Hagler), describe how the innovation was introduced, from assessment
through evaluation.
One recent innovation that was implemented in a healthcare setting is telemedicine. It
involves the treatment and diagnosis of the patient through telecommunication while sitting in
their home. Telemedicine offers various benefits to patients as well as healthcare providers. The
patients can get the consultancy without any appointments and tired routines. They can approach
sitting anywhere just through audio or video on the basis of diagnosis level—specialized
telemedicine software and apps that offer virtual consultation, appointment scheduling, and
maintaining secure communication. This technology is beneficial for contagious diseases. The
role of medicine was significant in COVID-19, and it assisted various people through virtual
consultancy. Telemedicine also extends to telepsychiatry, which offers consultancy for mental
disorders. The role of telemedicine in the modern healthcare system is crucial in providing
access to all individuals. It involves reducing costs and increasing compliance with patients,
which ultimately improves patient care (Teoli & Aeddula, 2020).
The process of innovation involves various steps which can be applied to any endeavor.
The first step in the process of innovation is assessment. The primary healthcare providers first
assess the need for telemedicine by evaluating the demand for it. They can determine the nature
of the disease and geographical location, which is essential to consider this type of service. The
authority then analyzes the feasibility of implementing the telemedicine services and considers
other factors as well, such as required tools and employee training. Going further, after
evaluating the assessment and analysis, the authority designed a plan for the implementation of
telemedicine services based on the former steps. It involves selecting suitable platforms and
determining the nature of the services provided through them. The following process is
development, which requires the tools and software used for telemedicine. The implementation
step requires proper communication between healthcare providers and patients to schedule
appointments and manage the software workflow. The final step is the evaluation of the provided
services, which allows the assessment of the performances of the implemented services. It
involves assessing the frequency of the patient, patient satisfaction, and patient care (Rejon-
Parrilla et al., 2022).
Summary
Various options can be used in teaching, which can be beneficial for the student to retain
the information. The role of humor is significant in the education system, which minimizes the
stress level due to the education structure. The role of technology is also crucial in providing
practical strategies for education. All these strategies should be incorporated to create a system
that offers optimum education.
