1. How many crop systems have year-round IPM programs?

2. Open the Year-Round IPM program in asparagus.
a. What are 3 of the perennial weeds a grower should scout for during the preplant
stage?
Bermudagrass, johnsongrass, common knotweed
b. What type of irrigation does UC-IPM recommend? Why do they recommend it?
Drip irrigation, for ease of pesticide application, water conservation, and to
prevent off-site water and pesticide movement
c. During the first year how frequently should you scout for beet armyworm?
Twice weekly
d. What is a recommended management tactic for beet armyworm in asparagus?
Treat according to the pest management guidelines when larvae are present in ferns
e. During dormancy what can be done to reduce rust, aphid, and purple spot
populations?
Clean the field of crop debris by thoroughly discing (or burning where allowed)
f. Name one herbicide approved for weed control in asparagus.
Trifluralin (Treflan and others)
3. List two ways to manage lygus bug (western tarnished plant bug) in cotton.
-keeping an eye on nearby fields, such as alfalfa, since lygus migrate to cotton to other
hosts. Proper management of alfalfa harvest can reduce damaging migrations to cotton
-avoid cutting all alfalfa fields in an area within short period. Leave uncut strip or check
at each cutting along the border between alfalfa and cotton to slow lygus migration.
