Brianne Chamberlin Music Appreciation 05/05/ History of R&B Music. R&B music will always have a huge influence in my life. Although I love many genres of music such as country, rock, hip-hop, and rap R&B will always be my favorite. I feel like R&B will always have a special place in my heart because of my memories I have listening to R&B when I was little. I always remember driving in the car with my mom and brothers and we would always sing present and also throwback R&B songs. Many people believe that R&B music can actually bring us motivation and even give you adrenaline. R&B music keeps you motivated and will even give you that little kick of adrenaline, if you notice many workout playlists will incorporate R&B music. People also believe that R&B music will also uplift you. Many lyrics in R&B songs talk about struggles and succeeding in overcoming those struggles. Lastly many people say that R&B music can actually help in justifying decisions. Lyrics in R&B songs can even help you justify on upcoming decisions and can help you make the right choice. These lyrics provide us with inspiration and capability to see situations clearer. The term R&B or also called rhythm and blues originated in the 1940s. R&B music got its start as a mixture of Jazz and Blues by African Americans. The term rhythm and blues was created by Jerry Wexler in 1947 for a marketing term to be used by Billboard magazine. During the 1950s is when R&B music started to change, it would start shaping into the “jump blues” styles which eventually became rock and roll. The 1960s were an era of soul, disco, and funk music. In the 1970s is where disco music started to rise. Disco music consisted of synthesizers,

the electric piano, and electric rhythm guitars. The end of the 70s is the start of contemporary and modern say R&B. Artists such as Prince and Michael Jackson started their R&B careers around this time. In the 1980s is when a major change happened to R&B. DJing and rapping started to become more prevalent. The 1990s were when artists started to adopt more of a “hip- hop” image which then led to the creation of hip-hop soul music. The 1990s were also known as the “neo-soul” The 2000s were when artists started to merge heavily with producer and rappers. By this time R&B music would forever be apart of urban and hip-hop culture. Lastly in the 2010s-present is when R&B continued to extract influences from technical revolutions from the earlier eras. This gave R&B a more modern feel, while also incorporating the genre’s themes of love and relationships. In 2010 R&B sales started to decline so artists started using softer and smoother sounds that incorporated that of traditional R&B. Drake was the artist was opened a new door for R&B music. The artist I chose to analyze in the R&B industry is Drake. Drake’s music career consisted of him rapping and singing mainly about relationships. Drake raps about his love for women and the relationships he has been in. He also raps and sings about the mistakes he has made in relationships also. His song Take Care ft Rihanna is mainly about trying to heal and love someone who has been hurt in a previous relationship. Drake is trying to tell the girl that he understands her pain and that he also went through the same thing in previous relationships, and he is willing to move on from past mistakes. Throughout the song Drake and Rihanna are reassuring each other to be strong and that they can always trust one another. This song is about building your trust in a relationship while gathering courage to try to love again even after you have been hurt.
