Treatment for mild depression (mild depression) - Psychoeducation - Cognitive therapy - Behavioral thrapy

Treatment for more severe depression - 1st generation meds: problematic * monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO-I)-- inhibits enzymes from breaking down the monoamines EX: Nardil (phenelzine) Parnate (tranylcpromine) * trycyclics - block the reuptake of monoamines EX: Anafranil (clomipramine) Elavil and endep (amitriptyline) Norparamin (desipramine) Tofranil (imipramine) Pamelor (nortriptyline) Side effects of these - insomnia, dizziness, weight gain, drowsiness

2nd generation meds:

  • selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) (only stops reuptake of serotonin and leaves others alone)

    • Fewer side effects
    • Ex: Prozac (fluoxetine) Zoloft (sertraline) Paxil (paroxetine) Celexa (citalopram) Lexapro (escitalopram)
  • serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)

    • effexor (venlafaxine)
    • cymbalta (duloxetine)

Antidepressant medications Psychotherapy (counseling) ECT - electroconvulsive therapy Electrical current → brief seizures → increases production of some neurotransmitters
