-1st generation meds: problematic
* monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO-I)-- inhibits enzymes from breaking down
the monoamines
EX: Nardil (phenelzine)
Parnate (tranylcpromine)
* trycyclics - block the reuptake of monoamines
EX: Anafranil (clomipramine)
Elavil and endep (amitriptyline)
Norparamin (desipramine)
Tofranil (imipramine)
Pamelor (nortriptyline)
Side effects of these - insomnia, dizziness, weight gain, drowsiness
2nd generation meds:
* selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) (only stops reuptake of serotonin
and leaves others alone)
- Fewer side effects
- Ex: Prozac (fluoxetine)
Zoloft (sertraline)
Paxil (paroxetine)
Celexa (citalopram)
Lexapro (escitalopram)
* serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)
- effexor (venlafaxine)
- cymbalta (duloxetine)
Antidepressant medications
Psychotherapy (counseling)
ECT - electroconvulsive therapy
Electrical current → brief seizures → increases production of some neurotransmitters
