What is PHI? Protected Health information
The Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) gives patients the right to
information about healthcare facilities managed. It permits sharing that information between
other health professionals and authorized personnel for the continuity of care. Healthcare
professionals must guard patient health information (PHI) from getting out to the public and on
social media. PHI includes medical records, laboratory test results, imaging studies, medications,
diagnoses, treatment plans, and billing and insurance information. “The most important rule for
any HIPAA and social media guidelines is that social media content must NEVER include
protected health information” (Alder, S. 2023).
What is privacy, security, and confidentiality?
Privacy refers to an individual’s right to control personal information, such as a patient
portal. Security involves protecting information from unauthorized access. Robust security
measures such as encryption and access controls are essential to assist in preventing a breach.
Confidentiality focuses on the obligation of healthcare providers and organizations to keep
patient information private, such as doctor-to-patient communication. Interdisciplinary
collaboration plays a critical role in safeguarding patient information. Regular training, open
dialogue about data protection standards, and a culture that encourages addressing concerns
collectively help ensure compliance with best practices.

o Do not post comments containing patient information
o Advise patients to refrain from posting their private information on social media
How to Maintain Privacy and Security
o Do not share your passwords with anyone, be sure to use a strong password
o Do not look into patient’s charts if you are not assigned to care for them
What Happens if you violate the Confidentiality Policy
o HIPAA violation may cost you a fine of $127 to $63,973 per violation, depending on the
violation type, and you can do some jail time. For example: In 2019, Elite Dental
Associates was fined $10,000 for disclosing a patient’s name and health condition details
in response to a negative online review (Alder, 2023).
o Nurses that violate HIPAA may lose their licenses (Rukavina, 2021)
The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act protects electronic health information. These
laws exist to control how healthcare staff collect PHI and disclose it using social media
(Rothstein & Tovino, 2019). Having these processes regulated allows patients to feel secure and
confident in our ability to keep their information safe and secure.
