Sociology is defined as the study of society. It can also be described as the science of social relationships. There are three basic elements of sociology: First, it is based on facts, how people act, and relate with each other. It also describes systematic reviews about society, and find reasons of how things happen and why, is something that Sociologists look forward to explaining better. The last element to discuss is how Sociology involves acting, empower people and understand the world they live in. The five paired concepts in Sociology are: Inequality and Privilege; Power and Resistance; Global and Local, Structure and Contingency; Solidarity and Conflict. They help students understand the different areas that are hard to comprehend in Sociology, such as comprehensive thinking and social structures. Inequality and Privilege help understand topics such as race, class, gender, or social positions, and how they influence society. Inequality in society is based on giving a different compensation of social needs and resources. An example for inequality in society can be seen in different work areas. For example, this is seen every time professionals with higher levels of educations such as doctors and lawyers, receive more respect than those who do not have that level of preparation. Power and Resistance is another pair concept in which Power is described as giving someone a type of influence to behave in a certain way. Global and Local refer to the locations where the situations that impact society occurs. A global situation would affect people in many different countries, while a local problem would only affect places near our cities or states. In addition, when describing Structure and Contingency, while Social Structure refers to patterns in social life such as stereotypes within society, Contingency is based on restrictions in social life produced by human choices and actions. Lastly, Solidarity and Conflict refers to the way of how people connect and support with each other, while making judgment of what is right or not.

There are two main reasons to pursue a sociological life. The first reason is about how people can learn about theories and ideas. This provides a better understanding of the pressures in society and how they are a reality today. It also teaches how to be more critical and creative about facts and problems that affect society, providing more skills that help you understand why things happen. The second reason resonate more with me because when I think of the term Sociology, I think of the social problems and the way society works. A topic that stood out to me from this chapter was The Discipline of Sociology. For me is very interesting how there is a process of how to deal with a specific problem that involves Sociology. To solve those problems, there are steps that must be followed for collecting information and data about a certain group of people. That provides an idea on how those people can receive assistance to their needs. It also serves as a strategy of finding ways to overcome those type of problems.
