1. What is the herbal product used for?
Historically used to treat insomnia, migraine, fatigue, and stomach
cramps.

oValerian may slow down the metabolism of certain drugs by the
liver causing a buildup of that drug in the liver.

oValerian can increase the effect of drugs such as:
Anticonvulsants (phenytoin, valproate acid)
Barbiturates
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium)
Insomnia drugs (ambien, sonata, lunesta))
Tricyclic antidepressants (elavil)
Alcohol
oValerian may increase the effects of anesthesia.
4. What are the nursing implications ?
Nursing implication for Valerian:
-Warning about allergies.
- Though valerian is generally safe. Studies show there is no harmful effects on fertility and fetal
development, nurses should advise pregnant women to avoid taking valerian because further
research is needed.
- Unclear if safe for children under 3 years old.
- Avoid if has liver diseases.
- Might cause drowsiness; therefore, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.
