Social stratification is the division of society into groups arranged in a social hierarchy. Society is arranged depending in some criteria such as race, class, and gender. A contemporary social issue that has happened for a long time now is the discrimination against immigrants. In the late 80’s early 90’s, working conditions for immigrants were inhuman. There used to be extremely longer shifts, low wages, and poor working conditions, which led a lot of immigrants badly injured at that time. As a result of this situation, many immigrants had a very low standard of living. Even nowadays, immigrants are discriminated just because they do not speak English, or they do not have American citizenship. Structural functionalism would see stratification as more functional than dysfunctional. Functional because it keeps an order within society. On the other hand, for those in disadvantage is a dysfunction because of the social inequality. For immigrants, stratification is a dysfunction when talking about jobs mostly. For example, immigrants usually do the “dirty job” like construction and sometimes they will get paid a lot less than they are supposed to. Also, immigrants are discriminated because they are part of certain culture, which is different from the American Culture. For example, when they talk a different language in public, they might receive racist comments. A conflictive perspective would see stratification as conflictive because it creates differences between cultural groups and social classes. Stratification for immigrants could be view through the Karl Marx hypothesis which states that there were two main social classes, the capitalist who owned the production and, the workers who are the ones that sell their services for wages. Karl Marx believed that the classes would remain divided and social inequality would continue to grow. Basically, the social inequality would keep growing if we do not change this divided society. All this is affecting not only immigrants if not all those who does not have the

resources needed to success. Instead of giving power and resources to those who already have it why we do not help those who needs it? Symbolic interactionist, according to the textbook, would see stratification by the behavior of the individual and his interaction to society. As sociologist David Sudnow argues “we make split-second judgments about who people are and which social status they occupy based on appearance” (191). People use to discriminate others just because of their different culture, language, job, education level, among others. Symbolic interactionist examines stratification from a micro-level perspective. Which means that people are judge by their appearance frequently. By the way they look, the clothe they use, the language they speak. Discrimination against immigrants is a very huge problem that we as a society should change. I think we should examine it through all three perspectives, but we should change some of the ways we understand and treat this problem. A Structural functionalism would give people what they work for, but I think we should give what they need in order to success. A conflict perspective understands better that there are some people that are not in conflict with stratification, but there are others who does not have the same resources that are in conflict with it. A symbolic interaction would judge immigrants for what they look like and would place them in a class that they might not belong to just because they “fit” the standards of that group. Works Cited
