Second Amendment

  1. What is the National Rifle Association (NRA)? How do they influence policy? How much money do they give to politicians campaigns? The NRA is an American nonprofit organization that advocates for gun rights. They spent $31 million on the presidential race to both sides.
  2. What is the exact wording of the second amendment? How do people interpret it to mean that there should be fewer gun laws? How do people interpret it to mean that more gun laws should be established? The Second Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." People who want fewer gun laws see it as a freedom and security. People who believe there should be more gun laws believe guns are a liability to America’s security.
  3. What guns are currently banned by law? Machine guns, short-barreled shotguns, and short-barreled rifles are currently banned in the U.
  4. What is the process of passing a new law? First, a bill must pass both houses of Congress by a majority vote. After it has passed out of Congress, it is sent along to the President. If the President signs the bill, it becomes law.
  5. What is the process of amending the Constitution? The Constitution provides that an amendment may be proposed either by the Congress with a two-thirds majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate or by a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the State legislatures.
  6. In the state of Georgia, what is the process of buying a gun? What regulations are there on gun ownership? What is the process of getting a conceal and carry permit? In order to buy a gun, you must have a clean background check and a permit to carry. In order to own a gun, you must be 18 or older and you must not have a criminal background. In order to get a license, you must prove your residency, pay fees, complete an application at a probate court, provide the court with a self-addressed envelope, and provide fingerprints.
  7. What is the public opinion of the following: Expanded background checks, banning assault rifles, banning handguns? The public opinion varies. Some believe it is a violation of our rights, but others believe they are necessary precautions.
  8. What are the opinions of your representatives (senators, representative in the house) on these issues? Johnny Isakson says,”I firmly believe that we do not need more gun control in America; rather we need more criminal control.”
