FYRS 1105

Dana Larkin October 10, 2018 My College Experience It all really started the summer before my senior year of high school. At this point, I think everybody would agree that they were ready to be done with high school and I most definitely was as well. So, I decided why not take that extra step forward and begin my college career at Columbus State University through my high school’s dual enrollment program. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. On my very first day of my college class, I was (of course) nervous. Going in as a dual enrollment student, I didn’t really prepare so I had no clue where I was going and I was not on time. Luckily when I got there, I asked this nice girl in the parking lot if she knew where Howard Hall was. She generously walked me to my class. I was 4 minutes late to my English 1101 class, but to me it felt like an hour. A few people’s glances at me felt like stares. I felt like the “unprepared freshman” stereotype. Everytime I went to class, I felt more and more intrigued by it. I was almost sad that it was only a month long. We would write in a journal at the beginning of every class that would correspond to a quote the professor would write on the board. If the class ever got too “tense” we would take a 5 minute break to do yoga and stretch. A few days out of the month, we would do something similar to show and tell where we would present something that we made ourselves whether it was a painting, a video, or a poem. Most of the time I would just show videos from my Youtube channel, so that always got interesting feedback. The classes I took the next school year were completely different from the one class that I

took during the summer. First of all, I took 4 classes and one lab. Most of these classes were subjects that I did not excel in in high school. Also, I was never really good at studying, so whenever a big test would come up in one of my classes, I would probably study the night before or even the hour before an exam. Let’s just say that never worked for me, so some things had to change. Since then, I’ve learned a lot of methods to keep myself on track. Time management is one of my top priorities. Now that I have 2 part time jobs and I am a full-time college student, I have quite a packed schedule. Even with a full schedule, I still manage to balance hanging out with friends and family and studying and doing my school work. Recently, I’ve kept a calendar in my phone to keep track of all the assignments I have due, my various work schedules, and my plans with my friends and family. I make sure I don’t fall behind. Not only have I been managing my time, but I manage my money as well. Ever since I got a job when I was 16, my mom has made me pay bills on my phone, my car, and my insurance. When I asked my friends if they would have to pay for these things, they said their parents would do it for them and all they would have to pay for is the gas. At the time, I was angry and confused as to why my parents made me pay for these things. Now I’m grateful that I got that small glimpse on money management because it helps me out today. When I go grocery shopping, I decide what I want and what I need. I managed to cut down on eating out. In addition, I would sell things on the internet to make extra money. This has helped me out tremendously. I remember visiting my high school in the middle of my first semester last year and I felt like I was walking into a prison. I felt like I was in college for so long, that I almost forgot the endless rules and the pointless limitations. It would be anything from not being able to wear
