Concept Analysis CONCEPT - STRESS AND COPING Definition: Stress - Physical or psychological tension that threatens homeostasis or a person psychological equilibrium that necessitates change or adaptation Coping - Making an effort to manage physical and psychological stress Antecedents: <what must occur/be in place for concept to exist/function properly> Stress: stressors, cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine Coping: recognition, cognitive ability Defining Characteristics/Theoretical Links: <characteristics or theoretical associations that quantify/qualify normal/proper functioning of the concept> Stress: mood swings, irritability, high heart rate/pressure, general adaptation Coping: substance abuse, mood changes, journaling, engagement in some sort of activity Consequences (Positive/Desired): < Events or outcomes that occur with normal/proper functioning of the concept or its characteristics> Stress: motivation. Fight or flight, Coping: resilience, developing positive coping mechanisms, homeostasis Risk Factors/Barriers (if present): <List the factors (physiologic; psychologic; physical) that may influence the normal functioning of the concept or its characteristics> Stress: lack of sleep, weakened immune system, chronic illness, avoiding stressors, socioeconomic status Coping: ineffective coping bottled up, socioeconomic status. Preexisting conditions, prior experiences Consequences (Negative/Undesired): <outcomes that are a result of the improper functioning of the concept or its characteristics> Stress: wearing on the body, substance abuse, heart problems, Coping: withdrawing, substance abuse, becoming angry
