Periodic table groups and bonds

  • Atoms in a group have chemical property

    • Noble gasses in group 18 dont react and exist as individual atoms
  • Covalent bonds: occur when 2 atoms share electrons

  • Compounds: substance that contain 2 or more atoms united in specic ratios ( must be great than or equal to 2 elements - Can be molecular compounds = covalent bonds

  • Ionic compounds: ionic bonds

    • Ex: NaCl
    • Occur when electrons are transferred between atoms, which creates ions - cations(+): lost an electron - anions(-): gain electrons
    • Uncharged elements/atoms have # of H+ ~ # of e-
      • ionic= electrostatic interactions hold oppositely charged ions together in ionic compounds - Opposites attract
  • During chemical reactions, elements change # of electrons

  • “ want: to become isoelectronic ( same # of e-’s) with the nearest noble gas ( most stable # of e-’s per period) Nonmetals:

  • Dull ( non shiny) and don't conduct

  • Become anions

  • Nonmetals become ions by reacting with metals and gaining electrons (anions)

  • If nonmetal become ionic ( in presence) of a metal they become - anions

  • With nearest noble gas in 2nd period on periodic table Metals:

  • Shiny and conductive

  • If they become ionic ( in presence of a nonmetal) they become + cations (lose an e-)

Na -> e- + Na+ *for nonionic elements # of H+ = # of e- when they react

Ion Rules: 1. Alkali metals: lose (e-, +1 charge) 2. Gain 2 13. + 14. +4, - 15. - 16.- 17.- 18. 0
