Periodic table groups and bonds
- Atoms in a group have chemical property
- Noble gasses in group 18 dont react and exist as individual atoms
- Covalent bonds: occur when 2 atoms share electrons
- Compounds: substance that contain 2 or more atoms united in specic
ratios ( must be great than or equal to 2 elements
- Can be molecular compounds = covalent bonds
- Ionic compounds: ionic bonds
- Ex: NaCl
- Occur when electrons are transferred between atoms, which creates
ions
- cations(+): lost an electron
- anions(-): gain electrons
- Uncharged elements/atoms have # of H+ ~ # of e-
- ionic= electrostatic interactions hold oppositely charged ions
together in ionic compounds
- Opposites attract
- During chemical reactions, elements change # of electrons
- “ want: to become isoelectronic ( same # of e-’s) with the nearest noble gas (
most stable # of e-’s per period)
Nonmetals:
- Dull ( non shiny) and don't conduct
- Become anions
- Nonmetals become ions by reacting with metals and gaining electrons
(anions)
- If nonmetal become ionic ( in presence) of a metal they become - anions
