Geology: The Study of Earth 1/17/23 (Day 1, Week 1)

What Will We Learn This Semester - Discuss how rocks form, and how they deform - Talk about energy inside of Earth’s interior - Discuss Yellowstone - Why Everest is the way that it is - Talk about glaciers and hydrology, how water shapes the earth’s surface - Discuss volcanoes

How is Geology Applicable to Your Daily Life? - Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions affecting cities/states/etc. - Climate change !!! - Gas prices - Energy Sources

Course Themes - Geology has a lot of terminology - Geology is like learning another language - To succeed in this course is to not memorize, but to understand and apply the terminology

The Scientific Method 1. Ask a Question 2. Collect Initial Data 3. Develop a Hypothesis 4. Test Your Hypothesis 5. Accept or Reject Your Hypothesis

The Earth System 1/18/23 (Day 2 Week 1)

System — multiple parts working together for greater good

Different Parts of Earth’s System are called Spheres - Atmosphere = Air - Hydrosphere = Water (liquid) - Cryosphere = Ice - Biosphere = Life (plants, animals, fungi, etc.) - Geosphere = Earth (minerals, rocks, magma, lava)

Topography — how landforms look on the surface Bathymetry — how deep the ocean is

Assignment — Event: Hurricane hits Florida - How does this affect water, air, ice, life, earth? - Hydrosphere = possible flooding, flooding in houses, - Atmosphere = changes in air pressure, and high winds - Cryosphere = maybe hail (?) - Biosphere = trees knocked down, roadblocks - Geosphere = flooding, trees knocked down

Earth’s Composition - 13% Magnesium (Mg) - 35% Iron (Fe) - 30% Oxygen (O) - 15% Silicon (Si) - 2% Nickel (Ni) - 1% Sulfur (S) - 1% Calcium (Ca) - 1% Aluminum (Al) - 1% Other

Compound Structure Examples - Quartz —- Si + O - Feldspar —- K + Al + Si + O - Pyrite —- Fe + S

Why Are Maps Important? 1/19/23 (Day 3 Week 1)

What Can Maps Show Us - Distances - Geological features — rivers, mountains, etc. - Directions - Other features: roads, T station, museums - Displaying demographic information — voters, population density, etc.

Types of Maps - Topographic Map - Latitude / Longitude - Direction - Elevation - Steepness - Scale - Aerial Imagery - Landsat Maps — satellite imagery - Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)

Latitude and Longitude - Latitude: stretch horizontally across globe - Longitude: stretch vertically across globe
