Generic Name ● Insulin Aspart

Classification ● Rapid-acting insulin ○ Antidiabetic

Drug Action ● Works by replacing the insulin that is normally produced by the body and by helping move sugar from the blood to other body tissues

Drug timing ● Onset ○ 5-15 minutes ● Duration ○ 4-6 hours ● Administration ○ 5-20 minutes before mealtime

Rationale for Use ● Used to improve blood sugar control in adult and children with diabetes melitus ○ Lower blood sugar

Most Important Side Effects ● Low blood sugar ● Diarrhea ● Constipation ● Nausea ● Vomiting ● Redness or swelling at the injection site ● Weight gain ● Low potassium levels ● Leg cramps ● Numbness ● Tingling

Most Important Contradictions ● Hypersensitivity ● Hypoglycemia ● Pramlintide ● Ethanol ● Macimorelin ● Hepatic or renal impairment ● Beta blockers

● Clodine ● Do not mix with other subcutaneous insulin injections ○ Excludes insulin nph

● 0-1 unit/ml in stable infusion fluids such as 0% NaCl ● Do not mix IV or continuous subcutaneous infusions with any other insulins
