Ralph (Adam and Stephen)

“But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch.” (22). Ralph is described as very attractive and tall with fair hair.

“Ralph spoke absently. The shell was interesting and pretty and a worthy plaything; but the vivid phantoms of his day-dream still interposed between him and Piggy, who in this context was an irrelevance,” (16). In this excerpt, Ralph was easily distracted by a shell he found on the island. Ralph tends to get easily distracted.

“‘Listen, everybody. I’ve got to have time to think things out. I can’t decide what to do straight off. If this isn’t an island we might be rescued straight away. So we’ve got to decide if this is an island. Everybody must stay round here and wait and not go away...’” (23) Ralph has established himself as a leader and shows that he is capable of leading the group of boys and making sure everyone survives.

“Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds,” (15). Ralph is perceptive but also easily distracted, as he quickly noticed the conch shell.

Piggy (Sophie)

“The naked crooks of his knees were plump, caught and

get ever so many candies. As many as I liked. When’ll your dad rescue us?” (13). Piggy continues to quote his Aunt, presenting the only adult female voice in the book which is repeatedly ignored.

(14). Piggy realizes the severity of their situation. He is the voice of reason within the group and understands what problems will arise without adult supervision.

Jack (Jack)

“Inside the floating cloak he was tall, thin, and bony; and his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Out of this face stared two light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger.” (20) Jack is shown to be a

“... The most obvious leader was Jack” (22) “... The Freckles on Jack’s face disappeared under a blush of mortification.” (23) JAck is both incredibly egotistical and ridiculously self-conscious.

“‘You’re talking too much,’ said Jack Merridew. ‘Shut up, Fatty’” (21) Jack is shown to be a rather cruel boy, constantly making fun of others.

“He snatches his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk. Next time there would be no mercy. He looked round fiercely, daring them to contradict. Then they broke out into the sunlight and for a while they were busy finding and devouring food as they moved down the scar toward the platform and the

straight through the castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, scattering the chosen stones.” (60) Roger walked through the little boys' sand castles and destroyed them for fun. This shows his dark and disturbing actions. Another example of these dark and disturbing actions is when he throws rocks at the little boys.

Percival (Adam)

“Percival was mouse-colored and had not been very attractive even to his mother,” (60). Percival is seen as unattractive, which may affect how he is treated on the island.

“As if this information was rooted far down in the springs of sorrow, the littlun wept. His face puckered, the tears leapt from his eyes, his mouth opened till they could see a square black hole. At first he was a silent effigy of sorrow; but then the lamentation rose out of him, loud

“‘Percival Wemys Madison. The Vicarage, Harcourt St. Anthony, Hants, telephone, telephone, tele—” (86). Percival does not talk much and when he does talk, he usually starts crying. This shows how low the morale is of the people on the island.

“Percival finished his whimper and went on playing, for the tears had washed the sand away. Johnny watched him with china-blue eyes; then began to fling up sand in a shower, and presently Percival was crying again,” (61). Percival is constantly switching between emotions and is quick to break down.
