- First, notice the demon that is clutching the wheel in its mouth and claws. This is Mara, the lord of desire, death, and rebirth. Mara has a vested interest in beings staying trapped in samsara.

1. At the top is the god realm. Sweet. 2. Moving in a clockwise direction, below the god realm is the realm of the demi-gods (asura). Rather than a solid line separating the demi-god and god realms, there is a tree filled with gods on one side and demi- gods on the other. The demi-gods are constantly fighting with the gods and attempting to get into their realm. Demi-gods are characterized by jealousy. They are unable to appreciate what they have, because they can see the gods, and the gods have it even better. 3. Moving in a counter-clockwise direction from the god realm is the human realm. Life here is a mix of pleasure and suffering - and, according to the painting, waiting in line.

  • Emperor Ashoke took Buddhism, sent daughter and son to Sri Lanlka to spread teachings, which spread to SE Asia and China

  • China is an Atheist country, religious practices are allowed but not strongly encouragess or supported

  • Birth Story: White Elephant came to mother in dreams and touched her belly. Comes out of mothers right side, not vaginally.
  • Due to being a Prince, he was born into Ksaitrya (noble warrior caste). Saw 4 things.
  • Asceticism: To train, to exercise. Meditation, Shramanas. Breaking off from mainstream religion (vedic). Questioning priests (results depend on if the priests does ritual right). Abstaining from worldly pleasures - Fasting - Wearing minimalistic clothes - Lack of sleep either by studying or not sleeping in a bed
  • Enlightenment (in Bodhgaya)
    • Reaches a state where he can remember his past lives, see into the future and into peoples future lives, how they will be reborn
  • Buddhism demotes Hindu gods because being q god isnt what you strive to be. Gods are still in samsara. Positive Karma cause people to be born as a God, but it can be used up
  • Early Buddhism is not devotional. Buddha does not tell people to pray to him.
  • Place where Buddha was enlightened was called Gaya, Now called Bodhgaya. Bodhi = awakening
  • or enlightenment. Bodhi = Buddha or awakened or enlightened -Turning the Wheel of the Dharma (In Sarnath “Deer Park”)
