-First, notice the demon that is clutching the wheel in
its mouth and claws. This is Mara, the lord of desire,
death, and rebirth. Mara has a vested interest in
beings staying trapped in samsara.
1. At the top is the god realm. Sweet.
2. Moving in a clockwise direction, below the god realm
is the realm of the demi-gods (asura). Rather than a
solid line separating the demi-god and god realms,
there is a tree filled with gods on one side and demi-
gods on the other. The demi-gods are constantly
fighting with the gods and attempting to get into their
realm. Demi-gods are characterized by jealousy. They
are unable to appreciate what they have, because
they can see the gods, and the gods have it even
better.
3. Moving in a counter-clockwise direction from the god
realm is the human realm. Life here is a mix of
pleasure and suffering - and, according to the
painting, waiting in line.
