Chinese Religion:

  • 风水: Fengshui. Wind and Water. Geomancy: Earth Divination. Feng Shui has to do with interior design, so that it is designed in a way that is in harmony with the environment. You need a compass to do this properly, so you need to know the cardinal directions. Trying to align with the environment around you and pay attention to the elements, fire water, metal, earth, wood

  • Must bury a person in a certain direction so they are not upset in the afterlife

  • Feng Shui, lots of patterns in the universe that are not easy to understand. IF we just live by these though , life will be good. We don’t have to believe in it persay, we just have to do it

  • Spirit Screen (In some restaurants and definitely in temples): Blocks bad spirits/energy from entering

  • Indian Religions: religions of liberation (escape from samsara)

  • Chinese Religions: Religions of harmony ( fitting in with/adapting to the social world, the natural world) Make yourself a piece of a larger puzzle. Building with Fengshui in mind means that instead of building on a beach (susceptible to hurricanes) or on a mountain (Landslides?) even though it might be beautiful

Three Doctrines/teachings of traditional china

  • Confucianism, Daoism,( Indigenous to China) Buddhism(Indigenous to India). Temples will have aspects of all three religions, so you don't have to pick and choose which one to be apart of. This is applicable all across Asia
  • Earliest evidence of religious ideas and practices come from graves burial for the dead and veneration for ancestors. So lots of planning and effort put into burying the dead

Masoleum for the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty

  • Modern Xi’An, discovered by a farmer accidentally. Kept a secret to ensure no graverobbers would steal things. Started construction at the age of 13 and continued through his lifetime. Each soldier has its own individual features. With this in relation to Chinese religion, it basically means that in death you usually have what you had in life. So if a king has an army, an army will go with him to his death.
  • You have multiple spirits in your body and when you die, those spirits separate and one soul (po) stays with your body in the corpse. So cleaning the grave, making offerings, praying to ancestors is important because apart of the soul remains in the body even after death.
  • Yang is the light soul, when a person dies it floats and goes to either heaven or underworld to be judges

Ancestor Veneration

  • Spirit Tablets. Can be for people and different deities like gods. Can use sweet bread, fruit, incense sticks. You want to do this because one part of deceased relative is in the grave, another is in the afterlife, and another resides in the spirit tablet. Gods are not persay good or bad, they can be depending on the type of offerings people give to them

Shang Di 上帝

  • Ruler of gods, supreme lord of the universe. Said to be descended from Shang Lineage, so during the Shang Dynasty he was considered the first. In the god realm, there is a mirror of what happens in the human world. In the human world, there are hierarchies, bureaucracy, and sometimes you can bribe government officials.
  • He fell out of popularity, and was replaced by 天 (heaven). Once the Shang Dynasty fell, future emperors would not worship the Shang Dynasty. So Shangdi was scrapped, and replaced with 天。Hierarchy resides in celestial, so you don't always go to one god for all of your worries
  • EMperor is the bridge between Earth and Heaven. The Emperor is in charge of maintaining the relationship between heaven and earth. These blessings would happen at the Altar of HEaven (beijing trip) 9 symbolizes heaven, built in accordance with fengshui. Nine concentric circles.
  • Emperor would practice asceticism (fasting) before the encounter. Inside temples are ancestor tablets. EMperor is both political/religious leader

Religion and Politics

  • Chinese emperors ruled based on divine authority “mandate of eheaven“ 天命 (command from above) Emperors were considered “Sons of Heaven”, personally endorsed and considered earthly representations of heaven. IF overthrown, this means that heaven no longer approves.

Divination: “supernatural” or “paranormal” method of obtaining information thats not available through natural or normal channels. (Counting beads, rolling dice, ouija board, weather examining) - ORacle: a medium through which gods or spirits communicate. Archaeologist found oracle bones, shoulder blades of animals or turtle shells (plastron) - Cracks analyzes as answers from the gods - Bone divination is not used in China today but Hexagerams (Yijing) is still used. 64 Hexagerms since there are six different lines. Each line is either solid (yang line) or borken (yin line), so when you have six lines thats 64 different
