Shinto:

- Largely confined to Japan, relatively small number of

practicers (2 Million). Every Asian textbook will have a

chapter on this. 神道。 (way of the spirits)

Origins of Shinto:

- 1. Ancestor Veneration(1000 yrs BCE)

- 2. Introduction of Rice Cultivation to Japan

- Shinto religion is tied to the agricultural planting and

harvesting of rice

  • Sake is important in Shinto rituals, you exchange rings (marriage) for Sake
  1. Arrival of Buddhism (6th c. CE)
  2. Compilation of the Nihongi (8th c. CE)
    • Nihon Shoki (Nihongi, Chronicles of Japan) and the Kojiki (Shen Dao texts)
  • Because Shinto isnt 100% japanese, not exclusively japanese
  • Chronicles of Japan, requested at the emperor. Wanted it to be written to emphasize his divine lineage ( descendant of Kami)

Wind Kami = Brother. Ameterasu Grandson, first emperor of Japan. Emperor is Top Shinto Priest

Kami

  • Powerful, worthy of reverence and awe. Can cause earthquakes, volcanoes. Reveal themselves via animals, physical objects, places of natural beauty
  • Involved in the affairs of humans, you can pray to kami. You ask them practical, lifelike things
  • Can be spirits of deceased ancestors ore heores
    1. Before you enter shrine, you must bow to show respect, 90 Degrees. Torii Gate, marks off Shinto sacred space. Must walk through the Tori. 2. Purify yourself (clean hands/mouth) 3. Approach the shrine, bow, ring bell,make offering, clap hands wide 4. Optional, get your fortune or write an ema, 5. Bow again on your way out

Shinto Values:

  • Purity: brightness (physical cleanliness) - grand shrine at ise rebuilt every 20 years, spiritual sincerity, shrine-goers cleansed by priest
  • Ascetic Purification practices, misogi. Waterfall purification
  • Nature: seen in architecture 9 use of wood)and interior design (natural lights, tatami mats, paper screens)
  • Life, creation. Rituals, good harvest, blessings for new borns, coming of age, rituals, weddings
