NSG 322: BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NURSING – Student Course Guide

TOPIC 4: Anxiety, Somatic, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders

TOPIC OBJECTIVES:

In this topic, you will learn how to differentiate among normal anxiety, acute anxiety, and chronic anxiety to determine appropriate, safe

nursing care. You will develop an understanding of anxiety defense mechanisms. The clinical presentation of panic disorder, generalized

anxiety disorder, somatic symptoms disorders (including factitious disorders, illness anxiety disorder; and functional neurological disorder),

and obsessive-compulsive disorders will be discussed. Building on previously learned concepts, the neurobiology of anxiety disorders and

pharmacotherapies will be presented. This information will be utilized to develop understanding, critical thinking skills, and clinical nursing

judgment when providing care for clients who are experiencing alternations in anxiety level or related conditions.

Objectives:

1. Examine the psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual influences; signs and symptoms; age-related considerations; and evidence-based

screening and assessment tools related to anxiety disorders, somatic disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

2. Utilize the nursing process to develop, implement, and evaluate a client-centered plan of care for clients who are experiencing

anxiety, somatic, or obsessive-compulsive disorders.

3. Discuss the classifications, therapeutic effects, major adverse effects, client and family education, and nursing considerations of

medications used in treatment of acute and chronic anxiety, and anxiety, somatic, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

4. Utilize effective therapeutic communication with clients experiencing anxiety, somatic, or obsessive-compulsive disorders.
