Human Population and Toxins Resource

There are different perspectives on human population growth and the dynamics associated with population change. Go to CIA World Factbook website using the link in the topic Resources and choose one developed country (not the United States) and one developing country and compare the following and answer the questions:

Developed country (Developed country is a country which has an effective rate of industrialization and individual income)

Developing country (Developing country is a country which has slow rate of industrialization and low per capita income)

Population growth rate

0% 2%

Birth rate 10 births/1, population

35 births/1, population

Death rate 8 deaths/1, population

12 deaths/1, population

Net migration rate

5 migrant(s)/1, population

-0 migrant(s)/1, population

Each question should be answered in a minimum of 200 words.

  1. Why do you think the population is increasing or decreasing for that country? Try to explain at least two reasons as to why this is happening? (Please refer to your textbook)

  2. I think the population is increasing in the developed country due to the healthy environment that civilians are living in. There is not a war happening in the developed country which makes it a safe place to raise a family and live in. There are proper resources and job opportunities for individuals to provide for themselves and their families so the population will continue to grow. In the developing country the birth and death rate are higher than the developed country. I believe the population is increasing rapidly because many people are living in poverty and probably don’t have easy access to contraceptives to protect individuals from unwanted pregnancies. Also, there is a war happening in the developing country which causes the death rate to be higher. The environment and resources are better in the developed country compared to the developing country yet there are more births and deaths in the developing country.

  1. How do diseases affect the population? Can you think about any diseases that has affected the human population? (Please use peer reviewed sources to support your answer).

a. The effect diseases have on a population are drastic. Diseases have the ability to travel fast and can wipe out millions of people in a very short time span. I don’t think it matters if you are living in a developed or developing country when it comes to diseases because if a disease were to break out it has the potential to spread to every country across the globe. There recently was a worldwide pandemic that occurred due to the coronavirus. About 6. million people died worldwide due to the spread of the coronavirus. It has been about three years since the outbreak of the coronavirus and millions of people have already been wiped out from the worldwide population due to the spread of the coronavirus (Nieto-Chaupis, 2021). There are not many other ways this many people could die in a short amount of time. I think that’s what makes diseases so deadly, they spread fast and effect everyone living on earth.

  1. Looking at the countries you compared, what are the toxins present in the environment that impact human health? Provide one example for each country. a. There are many toxins present in the environment of both countries. Toxins in the environment are impacting human health in both developed and developing countries. The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health has determined how many toxins are in our air, water, and soil. About 9 million people die annually due to the impact of pollution on the earth. In Canada, many deaths are caused by exposure to the particular matter in the air and carcinogens. An estimated 5% of Canada’s death rate is due to air pollution (Basu & Lanphear, 2019). In Afghanistan, pollution has started to kill more people than armed violence. The amount of air pollution is killing thousands of people in Afghanistan every year. There are very high levels of PM and moderately high levels of PM2 in the air, making it toxic. Water pollution is also a big problem in Afghanistan. Agriculture causes pesticides, nitrates, and microbial contamination damages the quality of water. Septic tanks and unlined landfills also contribute to damaging the quality of water by nitrates, and viral and microbial contamination (Conflict and Environment Observatory, 2018).
