The Basics (each question worth 5 point) 20 pts total

  1. From the first section in the book what are 5 environmental concerns you will learn about in this class? Question worth 5 points. a. Ecological Footprint b. Biomes and Ecosystems c. Population Growth and the Environment d. Toxins in the Environment e. Food and Farming Practices

  2. Every field is impacted by the environment, be it being the source or a product, source of a service, a concern to meet an environmental regulation.... How do you feel learning about the environment will impact your future career? (minimum of 50 words; question worth 5 points )

Learning about the environment will impact my future career in a positive manner. Being a Behavioral Health Science major with my master’s being interested in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, the environment is a large factor in these fields. The environment can have many effects on an individual and there are various components that make it up. When working with clients, the environment is something that needs to be assessed in order to have a better understanding of them. In this case, the environment would be seen as a source of a service as it may be helpful or detrimental to the client at hand.

  1. Everything is made from chemicals. In blogs or news articles, you might hear about chemicals being a concern, but this is too vague. For example you can say water is a problem because it is a chemical, but this is still not saying why. Find an example of a chemical you want to learn about. Question worth 5 points a. What is this chemical made from? i. The chemical that is being explored is lead. Lead is made from galena which is a mineral. b. How can it be helpful? i. Lead is helpful as it is used today in car batteries, weights, paint, and more. This is helpful due to the fact that it is a component of everyday used items.

c. What it is likely to pollute (air, water, or land)? i. Lead can be found in all areas, but the land would be where it could be found the most. Lead poisoning can occur due to exposure such as children placing toys that have been on the ground into their mouths, or through dishes that have been painted with lead base. It often can be found in dust or soil. d. How can the problem be lessened? i. The problem can be lessened through keeping a clean environment, checking paint and/or surfaces that are painted, as well as continuing to wash hands and other items that may be exposed. e. Provide a full reference for your authoritative source you used to answer this question i. United States Environmental Protection Agency. (2022). Learn about

  1. Ozone is a complex chemical. In the 1980’s a big concern was the hole in the ozone. What is the current status of the ozone hole? Now, you might hear more about ozone warning while driving. What causes this and why is it is problem? What references did you use to answer this question? (minimum of 50 words; question worth 5 points )

The current status is that, “The ozone hole is recovering due to the Montreal Protocol and subsequent amendments banning the release of harmful ozone-depleting chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs” (NASA, 2022). This protocol helps to reduce the amount of ozone substances that are depleting. Ozone warnings while driving are due precautions as car emissions can cause ozone to become bad. It is safer to stay indoors during these warnings as it is not safe to be inhaled.

Completing Research (5 points each- 3 for correct example, 2 for reason) 20 pts total

In science a research paper needs to have authoritative sources and all facts need to be cited. This does not mean you want to have lots of quotes, but instead paraphrase your material and cite the source

Many times if it tempting to use popular media as a source. However, this means it could be biased.

  1. Find one source that could be considered Left biased and explain why (minimum of 20 words; question worth 5 points ).

a. Water pollution i. This article would be utilized in order to provide a working definition of what water pollution is and demonstrate how observing China’s water pollution can help other countries. By using insight from China’s water pollution and seeing how they have developed from the beginning allows other countries to continue similar patterns. b. Sustainable building materials i. This article would be used to help someone understand the construction industry and how the impact of SBM can be a positive or negative effect. There is data to provide numbers and show how prominent SBM is. c. Environmental toxin farming i. This article would be utilized in order to demonstrate some examples of environmental toxins as well as its effects on a certain area, in this case, fertility. The mention of toxins are some of everyday use and can help demonstrate how toxins are seen throughout the span and time of one’s life.

Water pollution:

By continuing to improve and develop in various areas that may have posed a challenge previously, the quality of water can improve overall (Tang et al., 2022).

Sustainable building materials:

Strong construction can only be achieved through having strong materials as a basis for adjustment (Eze et al., 2021).

Environmental toxin farming:

Taking control over commonly used substances can help eliminate harsh effects when trying to conceive (Zhang et al., 2020).

Water pollution:

“Water is widely regarded as the most essential of natural resources for human survival, and adequate water supplies are essential for human well-being” (Tang et al., 2022).

Sustainable building materials: “They are environmentally responsive and can mitigate environmental problems such as greenhouse gas emission, pollution, imbalance in the ecosystem, and other issues being experienced with the conventional types” (Eze et al., 2021).

Environmental toxin farming:

“Many couples will go online to find information on how to boost their natural fertility before meeting with a community physician, and will often do so much earlier than the 12-moth mark” (Zhang et al., 2020).
