Biome and Ecosystem Essay

Emily Metcalf Colangelo College of Business, Grand Canyon University BIO-220: Environmental Science Professor Glover January 30, 2022

The Temperate Rainforest Biome is located in a temperate region with high amounts of rainfall. Some examples include the Pacific Northwest Temperate Rainforest, Alaskan Temperate Rainforest, and Oregon Temperate Rainforest. The temperate rainforests are characterized by mild climates or temperatures. The biome only experiences two different seasons, winter and summer. During the winter temperatures can fall below freezing point and summer temperatures hardly exceed 80 degrees. The temperate rainforest expects around 200cm – 350cm of rain during the summer seasons. The temperate rainforest consists of 2 layers of vegetation; the emergent layer and the canopy layer. The soil in temperate rainforests receives much more light than the tropical rainforests due to the dense layer of small trees and shrubs in the undergrowth. This biome can produce flowers, fruits, trees, and much more. As well as a vast variety of animals. The temperate rainforest carries a large diversity of plants and animals. Coniferous trees are “evergreen cone-shaped trees, growing needle- or scale-like leaves” (Coniferous Trees & plants,2022). Coniferous trees are the keystone species of the temperate rainforest. Examples of coniferous trees include sugar pines, red spruce, and giant sequoia trees. Coniferous trees can control the water availability during the winter seasons and use organic materials from the tree to decompose which returns nutrients to the soil. While coniferous trees are beneficial and abundant in the temperate rainforest, it also carries an invasive species, the Asian gypsy moth. The Asian Gypsy Moth is another parasitic species, it “impacts of defoliation of deciduous trees in the northern hemisphere” (Invasive Species,2022). The moth causes the trees to fall off and its larvae consume the leaves of “over 500 species of trees, shrubs, and plants” (Invasive Species,2022). While the Asian Gypsy Moth only eats for about a month at a time it causes major damage to trees. While the damage is inevitable, processes of population
