The Black Rhino

About the Black

Rhino

####### The black rhino is a key species,

####### their protection creates

####### opportunities for conservation.

####### They're grey in color and they have a

####### hooked-upper lip which

####### distinguishes them from other

####### rhinos. Black Rhinos are browsers

####### rather than grazers and their lips

####### help them reach food. They reside in

####### habitats such as woodlands,

####### savannahs, and wetlands. The black

####### rhino is critically endangered due to

####### poaching.

What is poaching
and why does it
occur?

Poaching is the illegal hunting and caoturing of wildlife (IAPF, 2021). The demand for Rhino horns is high and profits are made due to that demand. Rhino horns are popular in countries such as Asia and their horns are used for medicinal purposes and to make ornaments and jewelry (HelpingRhinos, 2022).

Longevity of

Restoration Plan.

Restoration Plan

Focusing on the Black Rhinos' security

and biological management is key. A sanctuary in Laikipia County has been implemented by Fauna&Flora International where the largest population of Black Rhinos is held (FFI, 2021). Their protection helps reduce poaching and increases monitoring, The World Wild Life is collaborating with government agencies to equip and train rangers and to support law enforcement agencies. WWF help provides proper training to rangers in countries such as Kenya, South Africa, and Namibia (WWF, 2022).

To provide black rhinos with a secured environment and enforcing proper training for rangers will take time. The short-term goal is to gather rangers to train and seek safe locations for the black rhino. The long-term goal is to

help the countries government update

their plans on how to increase the black rhinos population. The end goal is to eliminate poaching and provide black rhinos with a safe environment.
