ELM-470: Methods and Strategies for Teaching Mathematics

Dr. Priscilla Spellman

October 1, 2023

Section 1: Lesson Preparation

Teacher Candidate

Name:

Grade Level: 5 th Grade

Date: October 1, 2023

Unit/Subject: Number and Operations- Fractions

5. NF. 1

Instructional Plan Title: Number and Operations

Lesson Summary and

Focus:

Students will fluently add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and

mixed numbers by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions (KSDE,

2017).

Classroom and Student

Factors/Grouping:

ELL Students: Arturo, Diana, Eduardo, and Fatma.

IEPs/504s: Fredick, Ines, Kent, Wayne, and Wendell..

Extra: Maria and Fatma are both gifted.

I want to make sure that all of these students get extra support, additional time if

needed. Before any of these students get pulled I’d like to make sure that during

tier 1 they are getting everything needed to be successful. For those students that

only get tier 2 support, I’d like to make sure that they get put in a small group

where they get classroom support.

National/State Learning

Standards:

5.

“Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed

numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as

to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators

(KSDE, 2017).”

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

5.NF.

“Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring

to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, (e., by using visual

fraction models or equations to represent the problem.) (KSDE, 2017).”

Specific Learning

Target(s)/Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to successfully add and subtract

fractions with unlike denominators and mixed numbers with 80% accuracy.

Academic Language Unlike Fractions: fractions with different denominators

Like Fractions: fractions with same denominators

Denominators: the bottom number of a fraction

Numerators: the top number of a fraction

Renaming: when borrowing from a whole number you change one whole to be

represented by a fraction

Compare: decide which fraction is <, >, or =

Benchmark Fractions: when rounding a fraction, you can use 0, ½, or 1

Unlike other lessons, I would still like to have a word wall. But I will print out

the vocabulary worksheet and then have it in students’ math journals. I will also

provide foldable, interactive material so that students can glue in their journals

to have and able to see how it works. Students that need a little extra help will

get a smaller taped on their desk.

Resources, Materials,

Equipment, and

Technology:

Whole group/Small Group: Number World/MyMath Workbook Pages 124-

(random numbers), students Math notebook, whiteboards, additional worksheet,

iPads

Small Group Rotations: Whiteboard and whiteboard markers (for meet the

teacher), pencil, iPads for IXL learning, Freckle Math, OR SplashLearn,

Additional math worksheets.

For my lower students/students who want extra help: Multiplication fractions

because students need to know basic multiplication facts.

For Gifted Students: Gifted students will get their own project that is a grade

level above them with a mix of what we’re working on.

Section 2: Instructional Planning

Anticipatory Set

 I will use MyMath book to show students and help them understand the whole

assignment.

 I will have a blank anchor chart that will be up so that everyone can see it and how we

add and subtract fractions.

 During this time too I will be showing students that on IXL they will have an

Multiple Means of Expression

 English language learners (ELL): In order to see if students understand, they will be able

to use manipulatives in order to show me if they understand.

 Students with special needs: Similar to ELL students they will also be allowed to use

manipulatives.

 Students with gifted abilities: Still work on their solo projects, they will be able to be to

do this assignment on their iPad.

Extension Activity and/or Homework

Students who haven’t finished their worksheet/MyMath pages are homework. For my ELL and

SPEDs student don’t have homework but on the weekly newsletter there will be additional help

on there so that parents can print our extra worksheet. With these, if they turn them in can get

extra credit.

Reflection:

I think instructional strategies are important because the students are able to use them in order to

learn and engage. And I believe that I have a few throughout my lesson plans. The first strategy that I

used was show and tell new concepts. I want to make sure that I show students how it works, for example

using the anchor chart is all to show students exactly what we’re learning about. Then in small groups go

more in depth exactly what we’re learning and we’re able to do some example problems togethers. The

second strategy I have is for my gifted students. For my gifted students they are able to do a math based

solo project, this was something my mentor teacher did last year. It’s just a way to challenge students who

are above grade level while mixing grade level math. It’s just to see what students understand and what

they don’t understand with their own project. This would replace their homework, but I like this idea

because students are able to show their creativity through a series of grade-level projects. And the third

and final strategy is having students and allowing students to engage with one-another by allowing

students to do a tutor/study buddy. This strategy is where students can talk to each other and help each

other out and this shows me what students are understanding and what they are struggling with.
