Discharge Teaching Self-care and Signs of Complications Provide written materials on postpartum self-management, breastfeeding, and infant care - No meds that cause drowsiness should be given before discharge if she’s the only one who will care for the baby - Check matching ID bands carefully before Sexual Activity and Contraception Risk for hemorrhage/infection is minimal 2 weeks postpartum - You can resume sex by the 2-4 weeks after birth - Vaginal lube may be needed - Breastfeeding moms often experience vaginal dryness d/t high prolactin and low estrogen - PPD associated w/ ↓ sexual desire Contraceptives - Ovulation can occur as soon as 1 month after birth esp. in formula feeding moms Medications Analgesic meds may be prescribed as well as stool softeners and prenatal vitamins - Iron supplements for those w/ low Hgb/Hct Follow up care Follow up 6 weeks after birth no longer standard  instead w/in first 3 weeks all women should see obstetric care provider - Can provide support groups and referral to community resources - Warm line = help line sued when dealing w/ extreme concerns r/t infant feeding, prolonged crying, sibling rivalry
