A lot of developmental questions.

What measurements taken on a newborn (select all that apply)

Know that the head is bigger than the body as an infant.

As they grow older, the body will begin to match up. Look for specific measurements.

-2 years, the head is smaller than the chest, make sure!

-Know when they have stranger anxiety.

-How would you approach an infant?

-So the infant is on the dad’s lap, and they’re crying. How would you approach them? -Play Peek-A-Boo

The infant is not crying. How would you approach them?

Know when they laugh purposefully, laughing for a reason. 4 months. Smiling is 2 months.

When they start looking around purposefully (2-3 months). How old would you expect to see a problem, if they’re not being curious or looking around purposefully? -FOCUSED FIXED GAZE.

When does a child develop a personality? -It’s when they are born.

When a baby is introduced to food at 6 months. Solid food. Tongue protrusion. Whole milk is at 1 year.

The child is 3-4 years old, what can they do at this stage? -They can drink from a cup or scribble crayons.

Grasping an object, when do they develop motor skills?

  • Birth to 6 months

Check height and weight of a child, due to obesity.

Know what percentage a child is when they’re considered malnutrition, failure to thrive.

Know what parallel play is.

  • 1-3 yrs. (toddlers) plays alongside, not with another characteristic of toddlers

The mom is going to say that the teenager is sleeping a lot. -it’s normal they’re growing.

School age and infant questions. TEACHING QUESTIONS. -Know swimming pool/drowning safety. Make sure what to do in an emergency. Stop, drop, and roll.

Sibling is in the hospital, and the other sibling is jealous of the attention, and it’s normal.

Listen to lungs first before anything else, make sure they’re quiet. Toddler is on mom’s lap!

Child is 10-11YO, are they able to give them insulin injections? -YES!

How to talk to a child!

Know what Atraumatic care. -Definition: preparing the child for any unfamiliar treatments, controlling pain, allowing privacy, providing play activities for expression of fear and aggression, providing choices, and respecting cultural differences are components of atraumatic care. In the provision of atraumatic care, the separation of child from parents during hospitalization is minimized. The nurse should promote a sense of control for the child. Preventing and minimizing bodily injury and pain are major components of atraumatic care. -Separate rooms for different care.

-Hyper and Cyanotic. Know all the hearts.

Epiglottitis - throat is closed up, medical emergency. -DO NOT PUT TONGUE BLADE IN MOUTH due to complete obstruction. Nursing Interventions: make sure Trach care and extra equipment is at bedside.
