Topic 1 DQ’s and Participation

DQ 1

After completing the topic readings, recall a time when you met someone with a different worldview than

yours (e., pantheism, theism, atheism), and you had a difficult time relating.

1. What challenges did you have relating to that person?

2. How might an understanding of the other's worldview have helped you in that situation?

When I was a junior in high school, I loved sports and I played them all. Along with that came

getting to know girls of every background and ethnicity and walk of life. One in particular that

stands out to me is a friend that taught me so much. This friend walked through life doing things

much different than I had ever known or been taught, she was an atheist. This fact is important

because I am a Christian who had never met an atheist before and was very ignorant when it

came to understanding her worlview. This friend taught me that we can have completely

different life choices or worldviews and can still have a solid bond of a friendship that no one

can tear apart. We could ask one another the hardest and most delicate of questions without one

becoming defensive or angered. We allowed one another to learn and grow from the other and

become better human beings for it.

Having faith in a higher power and knowing that I have a strength from my God that this world

and its evils cannot touch gives me a confidence that she didn’t understand and wanted to know

more about. Her understanding that life is over after this life made no sense to me as we have

the promise of heaven. While we didn’t see things eye to eye, we both respected one another

enough to understand that conversations about faith or lifestyles were not about changing the

others mind, it was about becoming aware of those that are different than you and giving

empathy and compassion to the difficulties they face while giving them a friend in their corner.

I am forever thankful for that friend and will never forget to listen to those that think differently

than me because I might just learn to be a better person. Understanding that there are all

different walks of life and that it is ok to not agree but to still show compassion and

understanding to another human being would have helped me understand that it isn’t about

changing someone’s thoughts or beliefs, it is about trying to understand theirs.

DQ 2

After viewing one of the films listed in the "Topic 1 Discussion Question Film Resource" from the topic materials,

answer the following two questions. Before you post, change the title of the post to include the title of the movie

you are discussing.

1. What is one worldview depicted in the movie?

2. Which characters held that worldview (e., pantheism, theism, atheism)?

Provide at least two quotes or scene descriptions from the movie to defend your point.

In Star Wars: A New Hope a worldview that is present and show is pantheism. The jedi power

comes from a force that is a spiritual realm but no relational God who reveals himself is present

(DiVincenzo, 2014). You could even dive deeper to say that the more Luke studies the force the

more godlike he becomes in spiritual relation with the force.

Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Obi Wan Kenobi all believe in the force as well

as Darth Vader who has chosen to use his powers for evil rather than good.

An example of the force and the need to believe in its powers in when Obi-Wan is training Luke

how to use his light saber. Obi-Wan blindfolds Luke and tells him to trust the force and to feel

its presents. With a little practice and effort Luke can feel the power of the force and can use his

light saber without site but with the belief in the force and its powers.

A second example would be when Obi-Wan and Darth Vader fight on the death star. Obi-Wan

allows Vader to strike him but uses his subconscious to allow the force to help him disappear

before Vader can make contact.

All I know about worldviews is that we all have our own and they vary greatly! It feels that this

time in our history it is more important than ever to learn to be accepting and understanding of

views and thoughts that differ from our own. Being kind and aware that others feel strongly

about the views they have (just as we feel about ours) is critical to showing kindness and

empathy to others regardless of agreeing on something or not.

I would like to learn more about how our childhood and past traumas affect our worldview. Why

some people tend to be more empathetic, and others become more of a victim mentality.

Understanding what makes each person that could go through the same things react differently

would also be wonderful.

I am really looking forward to taking this class!

Pete,

What a wonderful sharing moment you have given to all of us. Thank you! Sometimes it is so

easy to forget that honesty is the best policy. We can respect another’s beliefs or differences

without being forced to believe them ourselves, we must merely speak up and kindly remind

others of that. If more people would learn from this moment you have shared with us the world

could be in a different place.

Have you always been able to speak up for yourself or is this something you have learned over

time?

What does everyone think? Would it be okay to date someone with a different worldview?

As a Christian who has dated people with a different worldview than myself, I can say from my

experience that it creates challenges that a relationship struggles to overcome. If you want to

eventually marry this person and have children will the children have your religious views or

your spouses? If you are Jewish and your husband is Catholic, how do you decide what the

children will be? Relationships and marriage are about uniting as a team, and it is very hard to

be on the same team with a person when you don’t agree on the big stuff. Small differences keep

a relationship fun, big ones can break it.

That is my opinion on that matter.

Thank you so much for sharing. This is a wonderful insight to two people who are making this

work. It is nice to learn this side of things and see that it can actually work, contrary to my

opinion before. I think the biggest thing that I have learned from you is that with proper love and

respect for one another a couple who love one another can overcome differences and find a

common ground to stand on. In my opinion that is far more valuable than two people who see

eye to eye on a worldview but both need to always be right or the one to win in an argument.

Also, respecting your son and his right to choose for himself is huge. Most parents won’t allow

children to make those decisions for themselves and I believe that leads to rebellion. Well done

to you and your wife!
