Nursing Considerations/Patient Teaching:

  • Monitor vital signs, drug intensity, reaction, and duration of drug.
  • Drug can cause headaches.
  • Abrupt discontinuation can cause coronary artery spams. Pre-Administration Assessment Focus:
  • Take apical pulse to make sure apical pulse is above 60BPM.
  • Assess for chest pain (time/type/duration)
  • Assess for orthostatic blood pressure.
  • Complete vital signs
  • Pain assessment
  • Contraindications/Precautions/ Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
  • Hypersensitivity to nitrates
  • Patients with severe anemia
  • Side effects: headache, hypotension, pharyngitis, nausea, dyspnea, contact dermatitis. Post-Administration Evaluation Focus:
  • Evaluate for prevention of anginal pain and absence of chest pain.
  • Vital sign changes
  • Adverse reaction to medication Nursing Considerations/Patient Teaching:
  • Assess vitals.
  • Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides and hypertension.
  • S/s of metabolic alkalosis and hypokalemia
