Identification of Nursing Informatics Topic

Identification of Nursing Informatics Topic Introduction We live in a fast-paced world that demands instant gratification and immediate service with minimum wait time and interruption of their time. This demand comes even when one is sick. There are times when one feels too ill to get up and physically go to see a healthcare provider, there are movement restrictions such as lack of transportation, or limited access to healthcare services. This was especially evident during the COVID pandemic when healthcare facilities were limiting access to the facilities or people were too afraid to go out due to the fear of exposure to the COVID-19 virus. This is where telehealth technology comes into play. So, what is telehealth? Telehealth Technology, what is it? It seems that everyone around the world, even in third-world countries and emerging economies, has a mobile device (Silver et al., 2019). Datareportal reports that at least two-thirds of the world’s population uses or has access to a mobile device[ CITATION Dat23 \l 1033 ]. Telehealth is the provision of non-critical healthcare service through the use of technology, specifically the use of audio and video, via cellular or Wi-Fi services and the use of a mobile device or home computer[ CITATION Gaj21 \l 1033 ]. This technology is beneficial especially when there is some distance between the provider and the patient. This technology enables healthcare providers to connect with patients, regardless of their location, using video conferencing, live chats, and other remote communication tools. Telehealth technology has come a long way since its inception, and its impact on healthcare has been significant. History of Telehealth

patients. Telemedicine decreases the cost of driving to the provider’s office, there is less waiting time, and patients (Kichloo et al., 2019) can receive care from the convenience of their own homes. Another benefit of telemedicine is that those who do not have access to traditional healthcare can have access to healthcare via telehealth provided that they have internet access or Wi-Fi and a mobile device or computer with video[ CITATION Gaj21 \l 1033 ]. One of the challenges in the inequity of healthcare services is the lack of providers and/or healthcare services in rural or economically disadvantaged areas. The use of telehealth helps solve those challenges. Future of Telehealth The future of telehealth and telemedicine looks bright as it is becoming increasingly accepted as a usual form of healthcare by the medical community and society. In fact, studies show that a majority of patients interviewed preferred telehealth visits compared to in-person visits with providers (Kichloo et al., 2019). The future of telehealth and telemedicine will rely on the use of wearable technology. With the advancement and adoption of wearable medical technology, healthcare providers to monitor the health of patients remotely, diagnose illnesses, and prescribe appropriate treatments. We can see this with the use of asthma and glucose monitoring devices[ CITATION Gre19 \l 1033 ]. The wearable technology will also enable patients to monitor their health and provide real-time data to their healthcare providers. Some of the more common devices widely used are Fitbit™ and Apple™ devices[ CITATION Gre19 \l 1033 ]. Conclusion In conclusion, telehealth technology has come a long way since its inception, and its benefits are clear. It has improved access to healthcare services, reduced costs, and improved

healthcare outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that providers can use telemedicine to efficiently provide high-quality medical care remotely. As such, healthcare providers and policymakers must continue to invest in telemedicine infrastructure and technologies to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare, regardless of their location or circumstances. The future of telehealth is positive, with continued technological advancements expected to revolutionize healthcare delivery. As such, telehealth technology is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare. (937 words)
