Delegation of feeding and setting up

meal trays to the UAP.

In report, make sure the next nurse is

so as not to burn the patient’s tongue.

Patients in the home need to be taught

food safety when preparing foods.

Teach parents to introduce 1 new food a

few days a part when switching to solid

foods to assess for allergies.

Expected weight gain for a pregnant person

is 25-35 lbs-increase calories by 300/day.

Promote healthy diet to prevent

cardiovascular disease.

Elderly patients who are neglected may

show signs of malnutrition.

Anorexia nervosa patients are at risk for

malnutrition due to lack of eating.

Allow patients pleasure foods at the end

of life regardless of aspiration risk.

Bolus tube feed is given over 30-60 minutes

every 3-6 hours.

Full liquid diet consists of items liquid at room

temp, and transparent through light (coffee, tea,

broth) low in nutritional value.

Low purine diet used for gout patients- avoid

scallops, sardines, organ meats, gravies, wild

game.

Low protein levels can lead to edema.

High and low potassium can cause

cardiac issues.

Low calcium levels can cause muscle

spasms and seizures.

Sodium can elevate blood pressure.

Check NPO status before surgery and

procedures.

For diagnostic tests/labs, make sure the

patient is aware of diet restrictions

(NPO, nothing red, clear liquids, etc.)

Before giving insulin make sure patient’s

tray is coming.

Account for any vitamins/supplements the

patient may be on-could contribute to

nutrition issues.

Grapefruit should be avoided with most

medications.
