Assignment 1 Within the film there are many ways in which the people resist and fight the stigma of mental illness in their various cultures. Adam uses modern medicine in hopes that it would help him, while Ekhaya uses spiritual methods to help heal her. This shows the different between the two, when one culture emphasizes medicine and the other natural remedies. There is also a connection to nature and ancestors in Ekhaya’s case while Adam is focused on the biological causes. They both face a stigma in which something is making them different from others. They have this is common, because society places a negative connotation on mental health and getting help. They can still both live normal lives although the people around them may not agree. This documentary really shows the difference between Western and other types of medicine. In both of their cases either medicine may be effective in treating them through the placebo effect in helping treat their mind and physical symptoms. I think watching this video would help a lot of people see different sides of perspectives and feeling like they aren’t alone in their culture. The same thing can happen in both cultures, but because of the different cultures they can have different diagnoses. The stigma of mental illness continues in today’s world which people can be scared to say something in fear they will be outcasted. When this changes people are more likely to be helped because they do not fear the reactions of others. Assignment 2 The author states that the correlation between school performance and the economy shows within society. Taxes within the economy are placed heavily on the poor, and it affects them the most, this is important, because the people that are needing the money most, are the people being taxed the most. This can take money away that can be given to schools and make the performance of school go down. Schools that need the money are not given it, as taxed are not allocated to the best of their ability and not spread out evenly. There is evidence that is given in which tests scores are compared not fund schools as much as they are not showing enough results. This is where the public schools suffer the most because they cannot afford as good of resources as others. The funding that schools receive rely on their performance. In other words, the better scores a school gets, the more funding they receive. The Gini Coefficient is a measure of distribution of income within a population. The author uses this to compare and contrast Western and European countries. The European countries have lower inequality when it comes to taxes than Western countries. This shows that there is unequal distribution of taxes when looking within the United States. This makes it hard for people living within poverty to get out of, because their money is being taken by the government. Overall, the journal article shows that certain schools have an unfair disadvantage due to how our economy is running and bring attention to the differences within the tax system.
