Safety Vocabulary

Decibel (dBA) - A unit of measure that measures noise levels. It is a value that represents the pressure of a sound. When sound levels are greater than 90 dBA over a 8 hr workday - hearing protection is needed.

Electrical Safety Switch - A safety device that will cut off all electrical power to machines in the event of an emergency. (Also called a Panic Button)

Fire Triangle - Oxygen , Heat and Fuel

PASS - Pull pin, Aim nozzle, Squeeze handle and Sweep from side to side

Ergonomics - The science of fitting the job to the worker.

Hazard - Anything with the potential to cause personal injury or illness.

Lifting ● Clear a pathway ● Check Weight and request help if needed ● Position body over load ● Keep back as erect as possible ● Lift with your knees ● Keep objects close to body ● Tighten stomach ● Deliver carefully! ● Light Table - You should never sit on a light table as these special tables have a glass surface. Never stack large objects or cartons of paper or place your books, book bags, or other personal items on the tables.

MSDS or SDS - a document, produced by a chemical manufacturer, that summarizes the physical properties of a particular chemical and the health and safety hazards associated with its use.

Machine Guards - Metal or plastic enclosures that cover moving machine parts and protect the operator from being cut, squashed, or hit by flying fragments.

Nip Point - The point of contact where two cylinders, gears, or rollers meet or come close to one another.

OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

PPE - Personal Protective Equipment (Safety glasses, Steel toed shoes, Aprons, Face Shields)
