West Side Story Name:
1. What sorts of sounds do you hear in the soundtrack? Identify as many instruments as
you can and list them here:
Violin, Viola, Violoncello, Double bass, Flute, Clarinet in B , Oboe | Bassoon, Trumpet in B ,♭ ♭
Trombone, Horn in F, Bass in B , Alto sax, Tenor horn, Euphonium/Baritone, ♭
Timpani, Timbala, Bongo drum, Cowbell, Drum kit, and Glockenspiel
2. What does the music sound like? Think about things like time signature/meter,
timbre(tone), rhythms, minor vs major, tempo, articulation, texture, style, etc. Write your
observations in at least a paragraph, using musical vocabulary.
The music sounds very classical and mostly homophonic—melody above chordal
accompaniment. I would describe it as upbeat and to have a lasting value.
3. How does the sound advance the story? Do the musical elements help you understand
the setting, plot, and characters? Answer this question in at least a paragraph, giving
thoughtful examples.
The sound accompanies the story by getting higher and more intense, bold even, when
something exciting happens in the plot.
